We signed him as a centre half but he played in a number of positions, including goal for the best part of a season. He had previously kept goal at international level for the Republic of Ireland.

RIP Con Martin former Villa player passed away today.

Thanks for the update - I had no idea.  A lovely man - very sweet.  We made him our Honourary President at the Irish Villains many moons ago.  Was interviewed by two of the lads from the club for our fanzine and he said that he while he enjoyed playing for Leeds he "loved playing for the Villa" :) May he rest in peace. (PS He's also one of the very few players to represent both the Republic and Northern Ireland at international level).

Pub quiz question, what former Villa player scored against England in their first ever defeat on home soil? Con Martin!

I'm not old enough to have ever seen him play but he sounds like a proper Mr Versatile; there's not many who have played centre half and goalkeeper for the Villa

RIP Con
