Aston Villa will have to pay Charles N’Zogbia an extra £1.3million after failing to offload him in January.

N’Zogbia rejected a loan move to AEK Athens last month and will stay at Villa until his five-year contract finally expires this summer.

The France international has no future under Remi Garde and is training with Villa’s under-21s, but will still cost the Premier League strugglers over £1million before he leaves as a free agent.

He is one of the club’s highest earners on £63,000 a week yet his Villa career has been a colossal disappointment since a £9.5million move from Wigan Athletic.

Villa did lower their wage bill in January by moving out a number of fringe players, including Joe Cole and Philippe Senderos, and are determined to make further cuts in the summer.

Sir Mervyn King, the former Bank of England governor, joined the board of directors on Thursday in what seems a clear plan to map out financial plans for the future.

King has been approached by Randy Lerner before but has agreed to help new chairman Steve Hollis, with Villa seemingly on course for the Championship.

He said: “I watched my first match at Villa Park more than 55 years ago, and have experienced the highs and the lows since then. I shall do my best to help the rebuilding of Aston Villa as together we return it to its position as one of the top clubs in the world.”
