Ugo Interview

Not sure if people have seen this already? Some interesting things raised. Thought it might be a welcome distraction from the horrible after taste of last night...

Any regrets?

I should have left Villa a bit earlier. I'd gone stale there. I had a few talks with Manchester City, Spurs and Manchester United about moving, just before they won the treble in 1999.
It came off the back of Dwight Yorke and Mark Bosnich going there. There was some interest but Villa made it difficult for me. I was held to ransom a bit. I'd signed a new contract and they were going to decide which club I could join. They wanted me to go to Middlesbrough so that's how it went.

Would you have joined United?

I'd have hitched a lift there.

He could have joined Yorkie and Jordan in the jacuzzi.

Great defender though. What we'd give to have him in his prime now.

Bloody hell Ugo, that last bit about Man U was NOT what I wanted to read.  I can understand it, but still don't want to see one of my favourite Villa players saying it.  Fuck sake!

good point eamonn. ugo is a good comparison to clark and baker to me at present as i can remember him making his debut v norwich and having a mare and his first 20-30 games were not much better but had a steady hand under mcgrath to help him through. it is what both our rookies at the moment need!

That extract wasn't exactly great reading. 'I was held to ransom a bit', my heart bleeds.

His debut wasn't against Norwich. OK?

I find the Spurs and Man City thing hard to believe - wouldn't City have been in the Championship at that time?

Not sure I understand this. He's saying that he had to sign a new contract and that enabled us to decide which club we should sell him to?

He didn't want to join Boro - who just happened to be paying stupid wages at the time - but he went because Villa were forcing him there

I thought he was loads better than Sol Campbell and that Campbell was only getting in the England team ahead of Ugo because of London Press bias. I also thought that Savage made the most of it when Dion head butted him and that Marc Albrighton was a future England player. It's funny what a bit of bias can do to your judgement.

Ugo was a really good player though, how far we've fallen.... yadda yadda.

So he's saying we forced him to go to Boro? If so why?

I made my debut in China which didn't make Villa chairman Doug Ellis happy because he had to pay me extra wages! I missed out in the end but it was a superb experience

Sounds about right

I can not express enough, how much it gets on my nerves, when he's described in the media as a 'Villa legend', or a 'fan's favourite'. Once he went to Boro (for the money, and you can't tell me otherwise), he was dead to me.

In my current mood, given recent events, I rather feel that Ugo can go and royally fuck himself.
