I seem to remember applauding the goal Helsingborg scored against us, in a UEFA Cup match, a few years back. Although if I'd known it would turn out to be the goal that knocked us out of the competition, maybe I wouldn't have!

I did as well, although I must admit it was more sarcastic than appreciative and was aimed at Villa.

Ted MacDougall's spectacular diving header for Bournemouth.

Ha. Just noticed avmark's post above. Great times even if it was only the third division.

I have applauded goals and also particular displays of players if they are substituted off and have been really excellent.  But its not a habit, I prefer to save my energy to cheer on our own players, it was great to cheer so loud last weekend that i lost my voice.  Been a few years since that happened

I applauded Dyer of Swansea when he was substituted last year. He had a cracking game that deserved recognition. Have also applauded other opposition goals and players when worthy - none spring to mind tho as I blank them from my memory as quickly as possible

When Charlton beat us 4-3 a few years back on the last day, to stay up, Danny Mills got the winner.  That wasn't applauded as such but I remember the Holte applauding the Charlton team/fans at the end for staying up.

I think we also gave Newcastle a warm round of applause when they went down.

Hernan Crespo's 90th minute consolation goal in a 3-2 win.

Great curler into the top corner.

Everyone else gets applauded with the V's.

I applauded a late Reading consolation goal at Villa Park in a 3-1 win a few years back with some considerable enthusiasm.

I had a bet on 3-1.

Dare I say it but the goal that Trevor Francis scored against us to complete his hat trick for qpr at villa park- it was a quality goal the way he took the ball down and volleyed in from outside the box and as much as I disliked him I did applaud as did many others in the trinity road that day.

When Richard Walker scored our 4th late on vs Watford I remember only half heartedly applauding. I had a bet on us to win 3-0. We'd also had a penalty shout at 3-0 and I stood up and shouted "no penalty".

Which reminds me,I can't remember the game apart from it was lateish 90's but an opposition player was brought down in our box and for some reason I jumped up and shouted "penalty". To this day i've absolutely no idea why.

Oh yeah, I was once the only person in the Tin Shed End at Feethams, applauding David Platt onto the pitch, when Darlington played Nottingham Forrest, in a League Cup game. In retrospect, I wish I hadn't have bothered.

I remember when Ronaldinho play for Barcelona against Real Madrid and his genius scoring three world class goals against Real Madrid and he was left with standing ovulation and clapping from Real Madrid fans and this is extremely rare event at the Bernabeu and it really rattled the Real Madrid players.

Fuck that.

*likes/thumbs-up*

I think the only time I've done it was when in with the opposition's fans just to avoid being found out.
Otherwise the closest to acknowledging an opposing player would be if he had an outstanding game and was being subbed.
