I think that the point is  that we seem happy to accept defeat to them on the basis that we had a go. Some of the comments epitomise what is wrong with Aston Villa, happy to accept defeat.

No, not happy, but proud of the performance.  But it's not quite the same as losing 4-1 to Southampton having been 1-0 up.  Nobody gave us a chance today, we could have done it, but in the end they got the rub of the green with their first 2 goals.  But every one of our players put a shift in.  Benteke was a powerhouse up front in the lone role and the Weimannator scored two great finishes.  I know Siralex usually gives us undue praise, but he said:

Quote from: Alex Ferguson
It was a magnificent result and a magnificent game. Villa did fantastic today, they ran their socks off. We have to feel for them but we never gave in. We hit the bar twice but it was after the second goal we came alive, and it was a fantastic game. I admire the tenacity of the performance, though. When they need to do it, they do it."

I think that line-up has earned another go next week. Even tougher away, but it'll sort the sheep from the goats.

From official site:

Paul Lambert spoke of his immense pride at the performance of his team despite the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

Lambert thought his side were outstanding as they more than matched the Red Devils for much of the ninety minutes.

He was impressed by the way they gave it absolutely everything in what was almost a famous victory.

He said: "I am proud. I thought they were outstanding. I couldn't ask for anymore.

"But that's why Manchester United are a top side. They do it week in week out.

"I am really proud with what they have given me.

"I think we have been playing well for a couple of weeks, hopefully the confidence will be there in abundance after that.

"The Premier League is really tough. They are a young side but they are playing really well at the minute.

"They kept on going. I couldn't fault them for the way the lads played and kept going.

"The crowd are your gauge. I am absolutely gutted to lose because they gave me everything they had."

Lambert hailed the two-goal salvo from Andreas Weimann and the strength and power of Christian Benteke in bossing Rio Ferdinand and Chris Smalling for much of the game.

He also praised Enda Stevens, who performed admirably in his first senior start.

He added: "One thing about Andreas is he's a natural finisher.

"Benteke was incredible for the build-up. He was outstanding.

"But Andi is a goalscorer. He's a young lad. He seems to have been around for years. The future is very good.

"Enda was terrific. He was up against Valencia who was by no means a slouch. Enda gave me absolutely everything, as they all did.

"I think Westwood and Bannan are playing well too. They are young lads but they are getting better.

"The front three are a handful. They are three young lads. But it bodes well for future."

I am really down right now. Just down. Kicked in the teeth at home again by those bastards.

We got nothing out of that. Nothing. Really tired of lining up every year to be losers.

But we didn't! Seriously did you expect us to win today, or did you want an encouraging performance. Lamberts less than 20 games into his Villa career. Stiop fishing or make valid points please

I don't think I'll ever tire of nornironvillain tediously repeating the same point over and over again.

Some real positives.

The way we kept going forward whenever we could. At least we didn't lose having sat back, and their first two goals owed a lot to good luck.

Several excellent individual performances.  Benteke in particular looks like he could become great.

At times we moved the ball around with style, though sometimes the last ball was awry.

Lets hope Lambert can maintain progress and belief even if results aren't as we'd hope throught his difficult run of games.

Its a long time since we were live on Sky and took part in a bloody decent game.

Impressed with the concern for the environment on here. I've never seen rubbish being recycled do much.

A lot of positives but sadly predictable in the end.  Again it was partly down to poor defending and conceding from a set piece yet again,  but a forward line of Hernandez, Rooney and Van Persie is world class and would trouble much better defences than ours.  At least we looked livelier going forward.  Delighted for Weimann whom I rate a lot, just a shame his header was too near to De Gea.  Benteke is a beast, impressed with Westwood and Stevens, and pretty much everyone else put in a decent shift.  I don't think we looked like a team destined for a relegation struggle tonight, but we need to build on that against lesser opposition.

It deserves repeating, but was anybody else laughing while celebrating the first? Our biggest unit against their's.

Their's ends up looking like an eight year old boy.

I loved it.

I think it is a preview of great things to come, too.
