You know, I think anyone looking in at us tonight might think us rather vindictive, petty and somewhat small-minded.

Yup.

That would be terrific. Just terrific.

Quite.  Makes you wonder why we didn't get on with O'Neill, having so much in common.

Great win, and a very important one indeed. Agree with the praise for Westwood and Bannan, Benteke looks like an absolute bargain and I remain convinced that we are a better team with Ireland present. Hopefully Clark and Vlaar can have a settled period in the team now, I think they are our best combination at the back.

Well done to Paul Lambert, got everything spot on today. We can go into the next games with nothing to lose and with the pressure lifted a bit who knows. How I would love to see us beat United.

If we beat United it would be dreamland, but we are a strange side for top teams to play at the moment, unpredictable and the Benteke factor will unsettle United I am sure. Despite being top, I am not convinced they are all that at the moment.

Cant really comment in full as I only saw the match from the 60th minute. However I must say Stephen Ireland looked very good and we appear to have started passing it well again.

Good win but we need to impress against the big teams who are coming up.

Weimanns movement looked very good.

"We threw everything at them and lost count of the chances" said o Neill.

Yeah Martin one shot on target in 90 mins ha ha!

Le Tiss almost laughed when asked to comment on that.

What did he say?

He just had a wry smile and said he could only remember Brad making one save.

Thinking about Benteke's towering performance, that was exactly the kind of thing we hoped for but almost never got from Heskey.

We're still 17th.

There's a nice gap above the bottom 3 now though. If those 3 are cast adrift by Christmas, it will make things a lot less stressful.

Oh it's such a perfect day
I'm glad they're turning on you

Did our lot join in with the booing at the end?   That would have been terrific.

I am so happy tonight I haven't got anything against Sunderland but we desperately needed the 3 points and it was fantastic to put one over that spiteful jumped up little twat :)

Quote
Paul Lambert spoke of his pride at the performance of his lions at Sunderland, hailing them as "absolutely fantastic."

Lambert was delighted with not only the effort on show but also the quality in all areas, typified by the monumental displays of Ron Vlaar, Ashley Westwood, Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor.

Boss Lambert said the victory at the intimidating Stadium of Light was "massive" as he looks to drive the team on.

He described the performance overall as the best display since his arrival at the club.

He said: "That was great. I thought the lads were absolutely fantastic.

"I think they deserve a lot of credit after the knocks they've taken. I am delighted for them.

"We were down to the bare bones and there were some massive performances in there.

"Ashley Westwood - in his first game at this level - was absolutely outstanding.

"You'd think Ashley had played at this level for about five years. He was excellent. For someone to come from Crewe and slot in like that and play like that, he was outstanding.

"I thought Christian Benteke was unplayable at times. Gabby is right on the top of his game at the minute.

"I am proud of them. They were absolutely brilliant. As a whole I thought that was our best performance. We played well against Swansea and West Brom in parts. I thought we were outstanding overall.

"To come to a place like this and win the game I thought it was deserved. We were full of energy.

"I thought we looked a threat. I think we're playing really, really well.

"We just have to keep going. That was a massive win for us.

"I think as a group we defended really, really strongly. We have young lads and they are full of energy and endeavour. We defended strongly as a team.

"This is a right tough place to come. There won't be many teams who come here and beat them. I thought we deserved to win the game."

Lambert now has his eyes on a tough festive period, starting with Manchester United on Saturday.

He added: "Now it is well within their capabilities to keep going. There will make mistakes because they are young but the progress we are making is good.

"We go into next week's game now and it's against one of the best teams in Europe.

"We are at home, we will give it a right go, the crowd will be right behind us. The crowd were great today. We were progressing, that's for sure."

The only bad news was Wigan and Norwich both winning. I thought Sunderland were pretty poor, they didn't have many decent chances that I can remember.  Saha should have scored.

I wouldn't be sorry to see Bent go if we can get decent money for him. I would trust PL to use the funds wisely. His summer buys have all been quite astute.  Good value and I doubt any are on anywhere near the kind of wages Volders was used to handing out.

Thought Lambert got everything spot on today. Can't fault a single player.
