Pat I think Dave meant Andys second goal over the two legs. Watching it for the seventh time today wasnt Brian Kidds goal in the VP leg bloody superb.

In which case it is a different error - Andy Lochead's goal was at the Holte !

I really hadn't seen how good Brian Kidd's goal was either. I just remember his goal and the tears of fear welling up in my eyes as it was pretty early, maybe 14 mins?

Brilliant to see those highlights. Too young to be at the games but what great games and atmosphere at both. Great goals as well. My favourite bit was when Chico dummied past George Best in the first leg. Class.  :D

Why was Andy Lochead's header in the first leg disallowed?

A young Phil Dowd was the ref.

the 1st leg at old trafford was my first away game aged 11 went with my grandfather.the best bit about it was the next day when i made sure i was late for school with the whole school in morning assembly watching me walk across the playground. i paused took the villa scarf from round my neck and held it aloft for everyone to see. then watching my mates applaud me from inside with all the man utd bandwagon jumpers from 68 silent. 2nd leg was even better i was inline with the toilet roll that came on the pitch when super andy scored the equalizer. even dropped my ham sanwich that my mom made me to take in my pocket in case i get hungry.

Dad tried to get tickets for the home leg and queued outside VP but no luck. I was only a nipper so probably wouldnt have appreciated it anyway but would have been nice to say I as there.  My equivalent would probably be the 5-1 v Liverpool.

Does anybody know the Villa teams for those games?

Like the bit where Chico left Best for dead in the first game.

How good a target man was Andy Lochead.

Did Bobby Charlton miss the first game?

Brian Kidd looked a good player.

Charlton played in the first game. We were singing the Clive Dunn song 'grandad' at him. Or were you being sarcastic?

It doesn't show on TV but Andy's second goal took a slight deflection off Ure and he adjusted his own header accordingly. Class.

We were the better team in both games and the better team in the final too.

From memory, same team both games :

Dunn; Bradley, Aitken; Goddrey, Turnbull, Tiler;McMahon, Gibson, Locheead, Hamilton, Anderson.

Mick Wright had damaged a cartilage in the away tie at Bristol Rovers - one of the best games I've ever seen - and Carlos Albradley came into the team.

Bruce Rioch recovered from his own cartilage op and replaced Dave Gibson for the final.

Steve, how many Villa fans were at the away game? I seem to remember reading 8000 at the time but I was only 8 so am probably very wrong.

I must dig though my old treasure chest, the one containing all the old Villa news newspapers, many cuttings from over the years including a turkish newspaper interviewing Andy Gray before our UEFA Cup game with Fenerbache.
I used to raid the full poster adverts outside the local Newsagents spouting the headline of the day.
Sure I have the one about Andy Lochead scoring at Mould Trafford in the first leg.

As an aside, anyone remember Andy coming back to Villa park as manager of Oldham in the season we were promoted from div 2 ?
As he walked to the dug out the ground rose to salute him "Andy, Andy Lochead in the air" he waved back and said after he had "tears in his eyes"
Poor Bugger we whacked them 5-0, I think he got sacked at the end of the season.
One of my all time favourites.

I remember that very well.  I have a match day programme from the end of that season in which Doug Ellis highlighted the crowd's ovation to Andy Lochead as the epitome of the spirit of Aston Villa.

Andy Lochhead was in the latter stages of his career when we signed him from Leicester. Although a tough rock hard centre forward he didnt score that often...but when he did they were usually important goals.

Hes retired and living his life out in Burnley where he made his reputation.

He wasn't manager, he was first team coach. He once described himself as "a touch player - I touched their nose with my elbow."

If Andy was playing today he'd be suspended more that he'd play with the way these so-called hard men defenders react.  For our younger posters, when Andy was playing defenders were of the type that didn't wear pink slippers or make-up and hardly ever complained when they were hit, just got up and got on with it waiting for their opportunity for retribution.  Players would more likely be upset if a throw in was awarded against them than if Big Andy put them on their arse.  Andy will forever be a cult hero for me.  A true hard man.

Saw an interview on Sky where Ron 'Chopper' Harris said Lochead was the hardest player he'd ever played against.

It's true that Andy was proper old school when it came to giving and taking the hard knocks. He was fearless and expected the opposition to be the same.

Not being the fastest player on the pitch, he was also master of the "late follow-through."

I remember Ron Harris was to present a signed pic of Bestie as a prize on Sky a few years ago. Bestie was on the week before and said said "How will he know its me. He only ever saw my back!"

The greatest footballer who ever drew breath.
