Never really fancied the coach options tbh. Decided we're not going anyway now, really cannot muster up the effort or justify the cost. Will head up Rococo to watch.

A day return to fulham last week from Chester  booked in advance cost me £36 and that was with an all day tube pass

A day return to Sunderland from Chester booked in advanced would have cost me nearly £90! Never understood the pricing of trains in this country for some reason it costs a fortune to travel by train to the North East! Must be the price you have to pat to visit the"hotbed of football"

I agree. 

A few summers ago I walked Hadrian's Wall. 

To get there: single Manchester to Newcastle £50

To get back: single Carlisle to Manchester £15.

Go figure

For future reference, and a hat tip to villajk for alerting me to this in the first place, if it's possible to break your journey up and get day returns on stops along the way, you might find a way of getting there cheaper. Sunderland might be a bit of a long haul for it to be practical but if you look at getting tiickets between Birmingham/Derby, Derby/Sheffield, Sheffield/York, York/Durham, Durham/Sunderland or something like that, it might be doable. Try plotting the route on a spreadsheet to explore all variables and options.

I saved about £20 a couple of years ago by getting tickets for Birmingham-Derby, Derby-York and York-Durham. The vagaries of rail pricing are beyond comprehension.

The cheapest way I found was
New St - York
York - Durham
Durham - Sunderland
Came in at about £70 and a very early start and late getting home

You'll be lucky to find any bargains at any time if the service is run by Cross Country Trains, which is roughly West Country to North East via New St.

I randomly went to Sheff U-Pompey on Monday night and managed to get there for 20 quid by splitting at Derby (I do have a railcard though) so as others have said for future that's probably the best option.
