I don't think it'll be entirely a case of us selling Bent because PL doesn't want him anymore, or to cash in. I think if anything, it'll be Bent pushing the move to get out of here. He's not particularly got the best rapport with the fans. I mean I like him, decent goalscorer but he leaves me cold. It's the same for many on here. There was a lot of love for strikers here in previous years. Carew was popular with fans. Angel was quite popular amongst his fans, as much as he was unpopular with his naysayers. Dublin was a crowd fave too. Bent isn't particularly. Injuries and form have contributed to that but he's not been the Holte hero many expected him to be. He probably senses that too.
Of course that'll mean naff all to him I'd guess. He's well paid but he could get paid more elsewhere, in a team in the right end of the Prem table. If he doesn't start every week I'd guess he'll want out in Jan. He doesn't seem happy with his football at the moment. I might be over analysing but that's how it seems.
The big concern is that we won't get all that much for him given what we paid, and I don't see all the fee being re-invested in the squad.

I wish they'd stop saying he's been stripped of the arm band, it's just been given to someone more suited, it's completely different in my opinion

Getting bored of this Bent saga now. Ok, yeah, he's a good goalscorer, which we need. So, obviously I want us to keep him. But, he isn't bigger than the club. If we sell him, then so be it. We'll get over it and survive.

That band was just resting on his arm...

I know what you mean though, he was only captain out of circumstance. Collins had left, Dunne and Gabby injured and Stan's situation. He was 5th choice a few months prior.

Eaxactly.  I think Lambert even said at the time it was a temporary measure........?

As for selling him, it'd be a mistake in my opinion.  However, if we do we just need to re-invest the money wisely and move on.

The thing is if we play him, he'll score his fair share of goals like he always has done. That in turn will help us pick up points and move us up the table. That also in turn will take pressure off the likes of Benteke and help them settle in and we can then give the likes of Bowery the odd game here and there and develop them quicker. It's simple really.

First thing - There is no conspiracy in why Bent hasn't started the last 2.  Before then he'd scored 1 in 5 and looked a little out of form, Benteke came on against Swansea and played well and carried his form on against Man City and was given the nod to start on the back of that.  For years we've been crying out for players who are in form to get a run of games, it happens and we get people posting conspiracy theories about trying to sell the players who are replaced.

Second - Bent's goalscoring record at tottenham - this is often quoted as proof that he's not all that and can't do it at a good club.  In all competitions he had 41 starts and 38 subs appearances, with the starts very rarely being in a run of games.  he scored 24 goals in that times, not a ground breaking record but not proof that he is incapable of palying in a decent side and if you look at the 2nd season on it's own you get 28 starts, 17 subs and 17 goals.  That's a good record for anyone other than the very top players in the league, and saw him finish as top scorer for a club who had Defoe, Keane and Pavlyuchneko as the other options.  So the reality is he had 1 poor season, directly after becoming one of the most expensive players in the country, I'd suggest it was pressure of expectation rather than ability that caused the problems.

Finally the idea that teams play better without him is a myth.  The stats have been presented above, we're a better team with him since he joined, the idea that selling him to buy a midfielder or 2 would improve us is hugely risky.

The following numbers represent Spurs' points total in recent years, see if you can guess which seasons Bent was at Tottenham:

Both seasons that he was there they made shocking starts which resulted in their managers getting sacked. Are you really blaming that all on Bent?

He also only started about half of the league games played in those 2 years, maybe if he'd played more they'd have more points?

If we signed Bent when we signed Heskey he would have been that final piece of the jigsaw imo, albeit we needed one or two extra bods in the squad at the time.  With Milner, Young, Downing, Petrov etc around him he would have fluorished.  Perhaps there is an argument to say though that now we have nowhere near as much quality in the team as 3/4 years ago that we do need forwards that have an all round game that is better than Bents to make up for our deficiencies elsewhere.

Probably, considering that he still had a good strike rate when he did start for them. He was their top scorer in their first season I think.

Sound like we need to find a man to link up with KEA, Ireland and Holman (and like of Bannan, Albrighton and co)

I personally think that we need someone who can just sit in behind those type of players and give them a bit freedom to go forward.
