Charlton 2-1 Aston Villa, 30/12/06. We went down to London for Christmas/New year week and I went up to the ground to try and get a ticket. Me and my mate shelled out about £40 each for tickets in the Villa end from a bloke who knew a bloke, we went 1-0 up but Darren Bent got an equaliser for them and they nicked it in the 90th minute. Headed back to try and drown my sorrows only to realise I'd not been paid for the month and had about £6 to my name.

The worst individual away games I can remember were Boxing Day '82, the Milk Cup semi at Oxford, Charlton '87 and the Oldham quarter final. Obviously Boxing Day at Coventry and the infamous 'Enckelman' game weren't a barrel of laughs and I remember games where our hopes of winning the title as good as died like Old Trafford in '90 and Blackburn in '93.

I was only a kid in 1982 and we couldn't get in the Tilton so our dad got us in the Kop. OMG its the worst experience ever, we lost 3-0 and they had over 43,000 in that shithole that day everyone of them celebrating like they'd won a war it was horrible. It was like I was a prince surrounded by Barbarians. My christmas ended at 5pm boxing day 1982.

Blackburn in '93

half of the crowd at Ewood were Villa that night. We were sitting in the Walker Steel stand with about a 1000 other Villa fans. Our tickets all had Gordon Cowans' name on them

Oldham away for me . Fa cup game , plastic pitch . Im sure it was 3 0
Yep midweek, Replay, weren't we 3 down by HT? I remember leaving on 60 mins to find my car had been blocked in so tried to get back in & they wouldn't let us ! Ended up listening on the radio outside the ground in the car.

FA Cup QF (first game, not a replay). It was my birthday so we were all set for a great night in what was turning into a great season. I think we were two down at half time and an early third in the second half prompted a mass exodus from the terrace, including, and this is the only thing that makes me smile about that night, my mate who had only got into the ground at half time because he couldn't get off work early enough. In fact he probably spent around 15 mintues in the ground in total.

Chris Price scored a catastrophic own goal and it was windy and cold. Horrible night.

Milk Cup at Oxford.
Me and my mate bunked the afternoon off school to go to that. My parents obviously had no idea but i did do the sensible thing and phoned them from a pay phone outside the ground to let them know where I was and that I was OK and that obviously I wouldn't be back home much before midnight.
Needless to say I got an almighty bollocking when I got home and was grounded for a month. That was nothing to the heartache I felled about the result.
Some years later my Dad did admit that although he was furious at me bunking school he was highly impressed at the effort I had gone to to follow the mighty lions

My programme turned into paper mâché at Huddersfield it was that wet.
And yes it went off after the game. They also tried to storm the away end when we were locked in for the customary 15 mins after the full time whistle.

Me, my uncle, bro and cousin were all sat upstairs in the Railway End for the 82 debacle...my first away game. Come the Enckleman night, it was just me and the same cousin - who I turned to before kick off and mentioned that our seats were the same as in 82, 'but at least we wouldn't lose 3-0 tonight'...which he reminded me about as we ran down the road to the car five minutes from time.

Southampton in the League Cup 1986-87.

Mini bus starring a couple of local terrace legends. Two of our fellow travellers broke up the journey down there by having a  fight en route, then another got detained for shoplifting at the services so we had to have a whip-round for the goods he'd pilfered. The rain got heavier, and heavier, and heavier. Luckily I'd got a ticket for the stand but still got soaked just running to the ground. We had two players sent off and a goal disallowed for only being a foot over the line. A couple of our number had stood behind the goal on the wettest night since records began so you can imagine what they were like when they got back. Stopped at a pub, where disharmony broke out with the locals, and a chippy where the curry sauce wasn't very nice. It was even less nice when it made a re-appearance a couple of hours later as we were passing through Stratford. Dropped off in town, night bus, home bedraggled and weary about 3 am.

Nobody has ever had a worse away trip, ever.

I wish mine had ended at 5pm instead of having to endure a family party where I was one of only two Villa fans amongst all the noses. Being twelve I couldn't even get pissed, although I seem to remember cheering myself up by going into town the next day to get 'Jelly Monsters' with my Christmas money for my new Vic20. Even that was tainted by seeing the big picture in The Evening Mail of Blake giving us the V sign after his goal with the caption 'Reject's Revenge'.

Looking back, 82/83 was one of the weirder Villa seasons. We lost the first 3, took a few pastings, dished out a few and still finished 6th. We also reached the FA Cup QF, the European Cup QF and won the Super Cup. And managed to lose 3 times to Notts County. Strange days indeed.

We lost 3-1 to Sunderland on the opening game of the season after the European Cup parade, and we lost both legs of the early round of the League Cup to Notts County along with a 4-1 defeat away in the League to make up the 3 defeats.  Oddly enough, Notts did the double over us the previous season in the league but we beat them 6-0 away in the FA Cup, and in 83/84 they beat us 5-2 away.  Very strange!

Seem to recall John Chidoze having a blinder for them?
