Just before Benteke came on we had a series of corners. I think he could of done some damage with the balls that Bannan fired in along with Concrete Ron to further disrupte defences. In the past most defences focused on Bent but now we have options ......

I think it's great that we have Bent, Benteke, Gabby and Weimann and they all offer different qualities. It's nice to have options.

Pretty much sums up MOTD pundits where when Alan & Alan are talking about Liverpool's midfield of Gerrard and Allen.. they say Allen is frustrating because he plays it about simply whereas Gerrard has the right idea because he always plays it forward. The game has evolved and most of the pundits haven't. Dinosaur managers are being left behind, as are dinosaur pundits now.

Despite all the media bashing everyone likes to do,  I thought that was a valid point.  I'm the first to be shouting at the villa play it simple keep the ball but if there's a forward pass clearly on like in Allen's case play it, dont pass side ways just for the sake of it.

Hansen said he was always taught look forward first for the pass if its not on play it sideways, nothing wrong with that and I wouldn't class that as Dinosaur football or tactics.
I'm not sticking up for all media pundits, but I hate the attitude of bashing everyone for the sake of it.

I don't often have much time for anything Messrs Hansen and especially Shearer have to say, but I have to agree with Mr Fuse, keeping possession doesn't have to always be about taking the easy option for a pass.  Sooner or later someone has to get it forward, and sometimes the quicker you can do this the more it catches the opposition napping.

I reckon if we have Given in goal, we would lose this one. Well Done Paul for sticking with Guzan :)

One thing not mentioned much here: I thought Bent played well. He was dropping back to join in moves and dropping wide to provide options and stretch the opposition. He worked hard, closed down, joined in the 'hunting in packs' pressing which is the key feature of our game now, and actually a lot of his touches were very good, very assured and much more confident. For the first time in ages, when he got the ball he seemed to have his head up, looking for options. If Lambert can keep getting those performances out of Bent when he starts scoring, we've got a hell of a forward on our hands.

I don't know what game you were watching? Bent did the occasional run down the channel, but was lazy when it came to closing down, Holman chased down 3 players from our own half back to their keeper, he ran passed Bent in the process.??
Another occasion we lost possession and Weimann ran back and closed down while bent just casually strolled back from an offside position.

He was better in some instances, like aerial he won a lot of balls and he when he did run the channel was more composed than usual.

But he has a lot of work to do to improve or he will be dropped by Lambert.

The main thing though, is I can see improvement in everyone and I think it's only a matter of time before Bent gets back into form, because if we keep up performances like that and get Bent scoring, we will finish top 10 no problem.

So what's the problem with that. If you have one of the best forwards in the League, whos main forte is beating defenders and running on to through balls, he is not going to be particularly effective if he is totally knackered fron chasing balls all day. There are other players who can do that.

Because this season Bent hasn't been making those runs or making space for himself, add that to not helping out in other areas, it was like playing with 10 men.

Yesterday he was better, but still not doing his job.

Weimann was a real team player, made runs, held the ball up and was getting shots away and was very unlucky not to score. I think he deserves to keep his place instead of Bent for Benteke.

These two links show how bannan's performance improved hugely after half time:

It was great to enjoy a game for a change and when you think of the new personnel and the short time PL has been in charge we have come a long way already. There is obviously a lot more to do, but I am absolutely convinced this is the man for the job.
In addition, I was really impressed by the body language of the players at the final whistle, Guzan hugging Ron etc....we seem to have the Villa spirit growing in this team.

I don't think Holman is similar to Bremner because he seems to have a better range of passing. And as silly as it seems to say I don't think we've seen him pass particularly well. But you can see he's always looking for the ball to slip the frontman in.

Finally, can we count Lowton's goal as coming from a corner? thus putting another shit stat to bed?

Finally managed to catch up on this. Spent 20 hours bus hopping in Thailand. Highlights suggest we played good stuff again. Guzan impressive and I fancied Benteke to score on his debut. Onwards and upwards. Holman impresses me. Lowton I've really taken too. He's a decent player and hasn't been fazed at all. Think he'll be a cracking signing.

Bent could do with being dropped. He doesn't seem as confident as he can be and he looks a bit lost at the minute, especially when a chance comes his way. I'd rather go with Gabby and Benteke, or let Wiemann keep his spot. I think he'll be itching to prove himself this season. He's got a little class about him at times. The more confident he gets, the better he'll get.

Things are looking up now. Hopefully I'll be able to snag the next game somewhere out here.

Did anyone else notice how, after Holman went off, KEA became more prominent in midfield? It seemed to me that rather tahn being a holding palyer, KEA started pressing and intercepting higher up the pitch, just like Holman had been. It shows to me that the players are working for each other, know what their jobs are, and are adaptable to changes. Very impressive.

As someone else said, for the first time in what seems an age, I was totally absorbed in the game, and celebrated the goals like a mad man.

The times they are a changing.  I like it!

Surely this was because Westwood was holding and kea playing further advanced?

Noticed this too! KEA played a more advanced role after Ireland went off. I think we will see more of KEA in this role as Westwood finds his feet in the withdrawn midfielder role and particularly if Ireland doesn't start to deliver a little more in terms of supply and threat from midfield. I think it will also help with the intensity of playing a pressing game.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Westwood start v Southampton, with KEA slightly further forward. Then its Holman plus either Bannan or Ireland on the other side.

Of course, he may keep the midfield the same
