Best midfields?
« on: September 10, 2012, 07:58:58 PM »
Just saw the picture of the Pedal for Petrov dinner on the OS. Seeing Ashley and Nige there made me think of the midfield diamond MON used towards the end of 2007/08.

Such a good quartet:

Stan
NRC - Barry
Young

Beat Bolton 4-0, Derby 6-0 and Blues 5-1 in three weeks didn't we? Really fluid midfield and the best I can recall over the last 17 years or so.

I assume this is distant enough to qualify as a Villa 'memory'.

I don't think they ever played together as a four, but we could have had this as our midfield, if we'd kept hold of them.

Downing - Barry - Milner - Young

What a strong team we could have been.

Agree that could have been our best midfield.  Would have loved to see that midfield feeding a fit and in form Darren Bent.

I like to be happy for the years they gave us, and try to accept that they moved onto the level they should be at where they can win the silverware and accolades they deserve.

Apart from Downing. That greasy rat can do one.

Any 'Best Midfield' without Mortimer and Cowans, isn't.

Morley,Cowans,Mortimer,Bremner

Houghton,Townsend,Richardson,Daley

Carradus,Mortimer,Cowans,Cropley

Barry,Petrov,Milner,Young

Ormondroyd,Cowans,Platt,Daley

On the other side of the coin I think we once fielded a midfield of Mark Burke,Ray Walker,Darren Bradley and Dean Glover.

Best I saw live was during the Atkinson era.One player who I thought never got the credit that his ability deserved was Garry Parker.

My favourite team and therefore midfield was from the 76-77 era.  We played 4-3-3 in that era with Gray, Little and Deehan or Graydon up top.   Our midfield was Mortimer, my fav Villa Player Alex Cropley and then either Carrodus or Sid.  Marvelllous team, marvellous times, fantastic season.

Dave Summer, totally agree with the midfield in 1976/77, along with the football, was absolutely fantastic. Alex Cropley was an absolute brilliant player and would have gone on to bigger and better things but for that Albion arsehole.

Who's Dave Summer??.

Anyway as you say, but for dirtystripeyfilthbastard Ally Brown, who knows what Cropley could have been?.  One of THE great injustices of my football watching life, was watching that fella's career ruined for him by that tackle.

5ft 8, not much weight, Alex Cropley's fookin great, la la la laaaa la la la la laaaaaaa etc

Iwas sitting in the lower trinity that day directly in line with his attack on Alex, was sickening. Only tackle I have seen involving a Villa player to compare with it was the butcher of bilbao on Gordon Cowans in pre season friendly in Spain. Would have loved to haveseen how Cowans and McMahon had got on in the centre
