Chocolate concrete was definitely normally served with pink custard. As far as I know it was nothing more than flour, cocoa powder, sugar and butter mixed together and cooked. It therefore required no cooking ability whatsoever, and could be made for hundreds of kids with hardly any effort at all at a cost of mere pennies.
