Villa on Safari 1973.

If you have access to AVTV I recommend you divulge into the past and watch Jimmy Coombes' home made film of a Villa tour to Africa in 1973.  It is wonderful.

Brilliant.  noticed a few things.

Great vivid Claret and Blue colours and no badge on the shirt, Andy Lochead getting "sentoff" for persistent shouting, Doug getting his wedge out, Vic Crowe and how big a man physically Jim Cumbes is, Chico Hamilton mad as a hatter and a safari where the lions were watching our Lions, to name a few.
great stuff

Not forgetting the seemingly endless supply of booze and fags.  And of course, caught on camera, Doug putting his hand in his pocket....very rare footage indeed!

From the snippets I have seen it is great to see the Villa players like that.

Very interesting.

What exactly is Jimmy Brown doing just after 3 minutes on part one ?
There seems to be a mass brawl right at the end of part one involving players and spectators. Either that or a lion had just invaded the pitch.

As far as the derogatory comments about Sir Herbert.... I hope you people realise it was Doug that discovered the source of the Nile,  wrote the original text of Heart of Darkness for Joseph Conrad,  found Doctor Livingstone and would have signed him for Villa if Stanley hadnt got there first.

Jim Cumbes used to drink ocassionaly in The Sportsman at Harborne. I was in there one night when someone asked him for his autograph and he dropped the pen. Everybody burst out laughing.I think it was just after the Antwerp game when he failed to hold on to anything. Good bloke Jim very good sense of humour.
