I always thought it would make more sense for the home dugout to be nearer the Holte End.

So you want to write him off because he came from the Irish league (as did the other players you mentioned) and because McLeish signed him?

Honestly, that seems more than a little bit unfair. It is pretty tough to expect a 21 year old to go from Shamrock Rovers to the Premier League in one jump.

We'll see.  I'm not writing him off, but the chances are, in common with most of the other reserves and youth players, that he won't make it.  That's just pure probability.  Even the players who were considered "exceptional" at that level like Albrighton are struggling now.

"Probably hasn't cost us very much, but still a bit of a waste of everybody's time." seems pretty close to writing off. If it is about pure probability re young players (and I guess it is), then that's something that goes for all of them, not just Stevens.

Either way, we'll find out soon enough, I imagine

The fact remains that he didn't feature at all last season, and even allowing for TSM's idiocy, given how poor Warnock was, Stevens wasn't getting a sniff ahead of an out-of-position Lichaj.

He joined us officially in January. There is no doubt that the League of Ireland is inferior to Premiership, it takes a bit of time for players moving up into another league to adjust. He has had a half season of training with good players to help him get up to speed. With his pre season behind him, lets judge him on the season coming up.

Like the sound of this if true

@JamesNursey: Told yesterday at #AVFC that Bent won't be sold, that Lambo backs himself to get N'Zogbia going and that Makoun coming back for new chance

I like the sound of that .   Be like 2 and a half new signings . ;)

Are we seriously writing off Stevens? Madness has set in. Give him a chance. Look at Coleman and McLean.

I'd like to clarify I wasn't writing him off and saying get rid or anything like that. I was just saying that I can't shake the feeling he's not going to make it at Villa, I hope I'm wrong.

Coleman looks likes classic one season wonder to me, as does albrighton. All pace, directness and willing, but ultimately too predictable.

I really hope I'm wrong on albrighton, but I just don't think he's got the game to be a modern day top flight winger.

Without sounding funny......Then why sign him in the first place?

Because he has potential and came cheap. Doyle, Coleman and Mclean have shown that singing League of Ireland players can be a shred move.

I really wish the notion that players of 21, 22, 23 etc have potential. They have potential at 16, 17, 18. By the time they get to 21 they should have made the grade or not. They aren't kids anymore!

Disagree completely.Players develop at different ages. Some are fully developed physically at 16 where others can be early twenties before they even stop growing.Kevin Phillips,Stuart Pearce,Ian Wright. All playing non league in their early twenties yet went on to represent England. I've done several years of youth coaching and seen players developing are far different rates.

Because he's a prospect for the future?

Don't forget that God McGrath came from the Irish league when Big Ron brought him to ManUtd.

As did Roy Keane when Forest signed him.

I think the fact that Steven did not get a game when warniock was poor and Lihaj was played out of position could well be donw to the fuckwit that was TSm as much as Stevens not being good enough.

Carruthers had great cameos at Liverpool and United yet the pillock never played him again either
