The first 90 days
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:16:33 PM »
It is generally accepted that most people who fail in a new job do so in the first 90 days.

If you were giving advice to the new manager, what does he need to achieve by September 1st to be a success in the season ahead.

As a follow up question, which of the probable candidates best fulfills the criteria?

FWIW here's my twopennorth!

1. Set some clear achievable goals with the board and communicate them openly to the fans.

2. Build up a rapport with the media to positively rebuild the club's image.

3. Brutally assess the squad - young and old.  Segregate into must keep, might be ok and definitely out of here.  Use this process to clearly signal to those who you're going to keep that they need to perform to stay - regardless of their contractual status.

4. Identify and recurit Bosmans/overseas budget signings on short term contracts to 'do a job' for 12 months.

5. In order of priority- identify and budget permitting recruit - quality central midfielder, striker/attacking midfielder to support Bent, quality central defender.

1. Don't waste time in getting out the poor players
2. Make some young, talented signings that also have a bit of on the field experience
3. Get a talisman in, your big signing, that the fans are going to get behind
4. Make sure your back room team are right
5. Play attacking football!

Don't buy a Flymo, they are flimsy, underpowered leave a patchy cut and end up in a skip within twelve months. Spend a few hundred on a decent petrol engined mower, have it serviced regularly by a reputable firm and it will last a lifetime.

1. Set some clear achievable goals with the board and communicate them openly to the fans. -         Set them yes, but can't agree with communicating them openly, why advertise to the rest of the world what our goals are?

2. Build up a rapport with the media to positively rebuild the club's image.               Keep the media at arms length, fed up with crass quotes from players and managers.  Other than contractual obligations, I would rather see an embargo on talking to the press

It's all about player assessment, really.

We have some good ones, some bad ones, some we're not sure about and some we're hopeful for.

He needs to sort through them all as quickly and as correctly as possible, aligned to the way he wants to play, and then be ruthless in showing the door to those he wants out.

After that, the ball is really in Randy's court to provide funds for the signings he feels we need.

Wear a ridiculous elf costume at the first press conference and reply to every question with 'Santa says....'
