So a better approach is No.1 target, offer job? Does the interview process hold no merit at all?

Think people are getting two concepts mixed up here.

Of course you consider a wide range of options, not just focus on one candidate.  But - you do it discretely - you 'tap them up'/sound 'em out. 

You then get yourself a very short short list who you interview because as has been pointed out several times, how many people are going to piss off their current clubs if they aren't very serious candidates for the job?

if Villa and Liverpool want to interview as many candidates as posible,
 maybe they can set up a 'speed dateing' interview process  save  lot of time and meet loads of prospects all in a couple of hours,
could invite WBA along to make up the numbers

The difficulty we have is that with so many clubs looking for a new boss at the same time, there's going to be a lot of horsetrading going on.  It's a bit like transfers, we probably need one of the clubs to appoint somebody, then it'll all settle down.

In terms of 'pecking order' you'd have to imagine it's Chelsea, Liverpool, then us and WBA last.  Is someone like Martinez going to say yes to us when Liverpool is still a possibility?
