You don't think keeping Wigan up three seasons in a row is success for them?

It is a success. But its not as good a success as say getting Swansea or Norwich into midtable with 0 players that were considered of PL quality 12 months ago. I think the point is Martinez has had 3 or so years to build that at Wigan, yes on limited funds, but hasnt managed it. Rogers and Lambert have - longevity is the question with them though. But if it were me, at the moment I'd take one of the other two.

Many thought he wasn't a big enough name to manage Aston Villa.

Reality was that with the economic situation, the choice was between ambitious young managers or journeyman managers.

Lerner chose the latter with added embellishment - what a mistake, which in my lifetime supporting the Villa, I don't think I have seen it surpassed.

We certainly could do worse, he would be an improvement no doubt.

Under Steve Bruce Wigan were like mid-table.

Under Roberto Martinez Wigan are fighting relegation.

Steve Bruce it is then.

But this Wigan side is weaker than the one Bruce had.  Also it feels a bit like Middlesborough under Southgate where they had been a midtable side who were slowly slipping as the seasons moved along, and given the lack of investment it was almost likely they would go down eventally.

Taken everything into account and Martinez has done a good job.
