According to Whelan ,Martinez is on holiday until Tuesday at which point he will give him a 7 dat deadline to decide if he is going to leave or not

Now this is where some journalists don't really know anything. Some papers today said he was flying to Boston to talk to the LIverpool owners.

Not my first choice but i would'nt be totally against him.

Maybe...you could be right, but I haven't seen anything from Poyet to suggest he's up to the job. He hasn't got Brighton promoted after 3 years, hasn't even made the play offs. They finished 10th in the Championships....at least McLeish got Birmingham back up after 1 season playing his drab football.

He got them promoted from League one, he took over in November in 2009-10, got them promoted in 2010-11 and finished 10th this season. They have a reputation for playing attractive football, he's done a decent job at Brighton.

Aston Villa chiefs today insisted the club are not in any rush to appoint a new manager with Roberto Martinez now back at the top of Randy Lerner’s wish list.

The claret and blues missed out on Wigan boss Martinez last year when he was persuaded by Latics chairman Dave Whelan to turn down Villa.

Martinez has also been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool and reports yesterday claimed that he was in Boston for another round of talks with the Merseyside club’s owners Fenway Sports Group. But it is understood that he is in fact still on holiday in Barbados.

The Spaniard will return from his break next week and Whelan has already pencilled in a meeting with Martinez where he expects the 38-year-old to reveal his desire to further his career elsewhere.

Privately Villa are likely to see how Liverpool’s pursuit of Martinez plays out and, should he not end up at Anfield, the claret and blues will be in a strong position to make their move. Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner are, however, relaxed about the situation.

A Villa source said: “The club is getting on with the process of finding a new manager and this process has been very focused from the outset.

“The timeframe is not as important as getting the best man to be the manager. The club feels well positioned right now with a number- of candidates under consideration.

“We are conducting our own process independently of what anyone else may be doing.”

Interest appears to have cooled in Norwich’s Paul Lambert, who remains favourite with bookmakers while the odds have tumbled on former Villa assistant Gary McAllister.

Meanwhile, Villa keeper Shay Given will travel to London today to consult a specialist over a knee injury sustained during training with Ireland.
The 36-year-old has sat out two days of Euro 2012 preparations and will visit a doctor he has used before.

Given left training early on Monday morning and the decision to rest him for two or three days was taken as a precaution.

Republic boss Giovanni Trapattoni remains confident Given will be fit for the finals, but had already all but ruled him out of Saturday’s friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Express and Star

I don't think we 'll be appointing anyone in the next few days

Reality check for some.. Martinez he has done more in his managerial than either Rodgers or Baby face Assassin. Rodgers was woeful at Watford and Reading. Martinez on principle stayed at Wigan last year give him a break Wigan!! there about as big as Walsall. Gollum would be a breath of fresh air after the last year, his teams play lovely football and what he said last year was defending his own club when we were still in a relegation battle with them. Were turning into Scousers persecuting 'managers' that have wronged us. As for Hoddle to well im 'old skool' id love him down Villa Park in any capacity he could teach our midfielders how to pass and move.

Two points:
- Brighton have been in the Championship for a season not three.
- He's been at the club two years. In his first season he got them promoted to the Championship. In his second, they finished 10th in the Championship.

I don't know who you're talking about, but it isn't Poyet or Brighton.

Moyes never got Preston promoted.

I remember many a time Everton being in a relegation scrap...I don't want Poyet at Villa doing the same, don't think he will have the bottle to get us out of it like Moyes.

I think if our manager can get the trains running on time that will be brilliant.
