No one. They have all performed below the standard expected except for young players coming into the team. Herd therefore is the best however we need to keep him grounded as the honour to be selected Aston Villa player of the year should be earned not given.

A special mention for Collins as well. I've not come away from too many games thinking he was rubbish and more often than not he does a good job for us.

I'm really struggling with the praise for Ireland. Even the OS are describing him as a 'Talisman' today. He doesn't seem to do much for me, he's just there. I think N'Zogbia has made more of a contribution.

Anyway, Petrov the winner IMO.

First half of the season, Gabby, but overall it was Petrov until his illness struck.

I'd go for either Petrov - because he was decent in the first half of the season and as a gesture of solidarity.

Or Carruthers - his only minutes in the first team included a nice run that should have got a (match-winning) penalty. He hasn't had the chance to show the lameness of character, poverty of decision-making and limited skills of the rest of the current rabble.

Does any single individual stand above any other?
