A reminder that things HAVE been worse - Forest away 86/87

Apologies to everyone who has tried to erase the memories of this darkest of days from their memories, but here is footage of Graham Turner's last game in charge and footage I haven't seen since making the shocking decision to go to the match.

Memories of the day are :-

Tremendous Villa support despite losing 4 of the first 5 matches of the season. The Bells are Ringing being sung with gusto by one and all as Forest dismantled us from start to finish.

Cloughie Cloughie give us a wave - and he obliged.

The fact that we were lucky to score nil, Kevin Poole was our best player on the day by a country mile and it could have been 10 easily.

It getting to the stage where we cheered Forest's last couple of goals as it became apparent that the more they scored, the more likelihood that Turner was for the sack.

The really sad thing about this season and this game in particular is the fact that we had some quality players.

Birchy and Tony Daley went on to play a major part in the team that were runners up in 89/90. Tony Dorigo, Martin Keown and Hodge won Championship medals with Leeds and Arsenal and played for England.

Turner must have completely lost the dressing room. Unfortunately, Doug decided the best man to replace him was Billy McNeill (for younger readers, the modern day equivalent of replacing McLeish with Terry Connor) and the result was inevitable.

Bloody hell, pass me some rope!!   that was the biggest defeat I could recall until the 7-1 at Chelsea a couple of seasons ago, can't believe that Forest didn't make it to double figures having seen this footage. 
From that weekend I remember that our reserves lost 7-0 to Man Utd as well.

jeepers creepers that was frightening. Should've been 10. I'm not being hairist but there were some monstrosity's on-show - Birchy's shirt matching mullet,  Elliott's wacko jacko, Metgod's toilet seat and Pearce's mane. Daley's seemed half sensible but he was to come into his own in later years.

I remember it because it was my first ever away game shocking result to lose 6-0 on your first away game.

My memory of that game was that i was lucky enough to be on holiday in corfu. it was before the modern day media access and i remember getting up from my beach lounger to get the sunday papers to see how we had got on. im sure turner was sack after that game cuz i spent the rest of the holiday waiting for the papers to see who is replacement would be and some man city fans taking the piss when we found out. at least i had a good holiday before returning home to witness the rest of the fertiliser that was on display that season.i still say paul elliot is one of my all time most hated players. came with a good reputation but man he was shit. anyone remember him ducking out of a header from a goal kick and wayne clarke smashing one in against the noses. god if only i had john gregorys gun that day

The Paul Elliott deal sums up Turner for me. Flog Steve Foster to Luton for about fifty grand and then spend around eight times as much to buy the centre half he goes on to keep out of the team.

I think one of the final nails in the coffin was the Sunday Mercury headline Villa 0 Others 13

next day he was sacked. Back page of the Sun read "Villa axe Turner". Have to say it was a brilliant moment packing that in my paper round bag delivering it and getting home and telling the house about the fact ''Villa had axed Turner''. Never have I despised a Villa boss as much as that. He relegated Dennis Mortimer to a season in the reserves - the whole season. Steve Foster said at the time (after departing) Turner treated the first team squad like 3rd Division men. Didier Six (member of the France 1984 European Championship winning team) arrived and couldn't pack his bags quick enough - and then there was Turner telling a team who 18 months previous had been Super Cup winners to "think Europe" (his idea of motivation for trying to end the season in the top six - which Villa did not). He might of signed Simon Stainrod and we might of put eight past Exeter City, but the things that man did to Aston Villa was downright criminal. Wanker.

Its sad and unfortunate the way Elliot's career ended (the Dean Saunders incident at Anfield) but for us he was in my mind shockingly bad and a total waste of money, and it pisses me off in the press that he's nowadays made out to be a Chelsea legend (in a poor Chelsea side compared to nowadays) and was a great player;  it's not the waste of space and prima donna in a claret and blue shirt that I remember.

That "clearance" by Elliott for Forests second goal is without doubt the most pathetic piece of defending by a professional player I have ever ever witnessed. He makes Curtis Davies look like Maldini.

Charlie - you are so right, the media love him. He played in Napoli (I think), in the 90's - perhaps his confidence was shot to pieces at ours but dear me, shocking !

Great footage from an age thin on the ground. It didn't show one shot by us did it :-(

It's like watching a Sunday League game, between a top team and one put together at the last minute who don't know each other.
You're right Richie, things are nowhere near as bad as that now.
