I just looked on the MacMillan web site and it's a bit more positive than Wikipedia:

Quote
When there is no sign of the leukaemia and the marrow is working Onormally this is called remission. With treatment, more than 9 out of 10 adults (90%) with ALL will go into remission. Further treatment, called consolidation, may be given to stop the leukaemia coming back. This is followed by more treatment known as maintenance that is given to prolong the remission for as long as possible.

For some, remission lasts indefinitely and the person is said to be cured. If the ALL comes back (relapses) after treatment, it can often be treated again and a second remission may be possible.

I do not wish to be a merchant of doom, and I am sure we will find out more in the coming days, but Stan has been diagnosed with Acute Leukemia...

Quote
Types of Leukemia
Leukemia is classified by how quickly it progresses. Acute leukemia is fast-growing and can overrun the body within a few weeks or months. By contrast, chronic leukemia is slow-growing and progressively worsens over years.

Acute versus Chronic Leukemia
The blood-forming (hematopoietic) cells of acute leukemia remain in an immature state, so they reproduce and accumulate very rapidly. Therefore, acute leukemia needs to be treated immediately, otherwise the disease may be fatal within a few months. Fortunately, some subtypes of acute leukemia respond very well to available therapies and they are curable. Children often develop acute forms of leukemia, which are managed differently from leukemia in adults.

In chronic leukemia, the blood-forming cells eventually mature, or differentiate, but they are not "normal." They remain in the bloodstream much longer than normal white blood cells, and they are unable to combat infection well.

It's probably not the time to get too tied up in the different types of leukaemia, but some general pointers for those who are interested.

Kids tend to the acute leukemias and the outcome is usually good.  Older people tend to get the chronic types which are not curable but the prognosis somewhat contradictorally is good (in a few cases they might not even be life limiting).

Stan is in a unfortunate middle group.  He has an acute leukaemia (either ALL or AML) - in these cases there is the potential for a cure but the treatment is punishing and the chances reduce with age.

To a long winded explanation short - its a bit of a bastard.

On a footballing note, I've warmed to stan over the past couple of seasons.  Of course we know he tires, but for 60 mins or so he's head and shoulders above anyone else in our midfield.

Fingers crossed eh?

There’s a large part of me that really wants to be there tomorrow. If ever there is a time when we as a club feel like a family then it is tomorrow.
Know how you feel.  I hate McLeish and dont want to every witness him in the flesh in charge of us, but feel I must be there for the Villa family.

Don’t want to sound like I’m preaching at you but you should definitely put AM to the back of your mind and get down there tomorrow for Stan. It’s definitely time for the Villa family to come together.

The media will focus on Villa Park tomorrow ....lets show the support for the Club to country ...currently Villa is seen as a totally divided club - lets get behind stan and the team tomorrow.

Anyone who wishes to take protests just stay away - this is not the time

Lets ensure we are the 12th man tomorrow and get the 3 points we need - I'm sure thats the best treatment for Stan for starters

Get well Stan you have been a credit to yourself and the Club despite the many moaners - 3 points Saturday !

Horrible news. I wish Stan all the best. He's a rarity in football these days: great guy, humble, a top pro and works his bollocks off. He's been excellent for the club and an absolute model pro. Brilliant example to the young kids. Stan doesn't strike me as having a big ego, it always seems like he helps the kids out and has time to give out advice.

Really hoping he pulls through and I thank him from the bottom of my ticker for his service to the club. Hopefully the fact he's a prem footballer and thus incredibly fit, will help in his fight..

He deserves nothing but the full support from the fans and the club. He's always given everything for the Villa.

Here's hoping you can beat it Stan!
