I guess we all have our views on this one. I doubt anyone would disagree that he is giving his money for worthy causes but he also appears to be buying himself a legacy-hence spraying his name on walls.
Lots of business people give to charity because it is good business. Some people give because they are moved by a cause or wish to help. Etc. It might be all of these with Herbert and if he offered it to my charity I would undoubtedly...
Tell him to feck off!

Some might call it self promotion, others would say he's raising the profile of a worthy cause. If you don't like the bloke you'll say its the former I suppose.

I think there comes a time with someone like Doug when the fact that it's him, again, overshadows the message. Looking at that story my first thought would be it's Doug Ellis getting his photo in the paper again, and the second is that once more he's having something named after himself. The worthy cause gets lost in that baggage.

True, Dave but who's to blame for that, Doug or the journalist?

I don't think the journalist named the place and neither do I think Doug was dragged kicking and screaming to have his photo taken.

Absolutely Dave, I don't disagree with you. He's following a well trodden path here, and he's never been adverse to seeing his name in perspex, but regardless, if there are benefits to others and it makes him happy, let the old bugger get on with it.

I don't see the problem with him getting a little bit of publicity in the local rag for a decent contribution to a good cause.
If it were donig any harm, fair enough, but does it benefit the university any more for him to have done this anonymously? I really don't see what your problem is.

I suspect at his age there's little chance of reforming his ego maniacal tendencies.

Fair play to him
He still shows up when the Old Stars turn out at the Gas club in Erdington to raise a bit of cash (admittedly in his Roller), but good on him I say

I used to really dislike the dead hand of Doug on our progress. Now I see him in a much less critical light. Indeed it is an interesting thought as to how much, if any, influence he may have with Randy. His trigger finger, ready to fire AMc, might be useful at this moment, and if it transpired that Doug was the author of Eck's demise how many of us would begrudge his self publicised charity exploits. o my message is simple, well done Doug, now get on with Villa bis and get shut of this useless negative scot please.

He's given £2M to build a library. He's old. Yes, hes an egomaniac, but he wants to be remembered. Give him a break.

A woman on the radio this morning commented that it's a very British thing that openly giving to charity is somehow considered to be vulgar. She said we should celebrate them more. I agree. The net result is good.
