I'm still hopeful about Benteke. He clearly wants to join and Genk are being slightly insane about the amount of money. However, I do question the logic of looking this late in the window - maybe Randy has made funds available following our poor start? In which case, it's another incompetent balls-up by the chairman I'm afraid.

As far as Bennett goes it may have been a question of switching targets when it became clear the Cresswell deal wasn't going to come off.  As far as Benteke is concerned we don't know how long negotiations have been ongoing.  Sometimes clubs hold out until the end of the window to get the best possible price.

To be honest, that's the way I see it. I think he's left it, and left it, in the hoping of shipping off a few more, but no one wants Hutton etc. The supposed meeting he and Lambert had probably resulted in funds being released now. I'm sure Lamberts a straight shooter. He has been with the fans thus far. Simple fact is we're not good enough at the moment and it needs addressing. But yes, Randy's lack of football nouse seems to be on display again.
Still, late or not there's always a rocket up the backside flurry last minute. I could easily see us getting 2-3 more players by tomorrow night. We'll see.

Bugger that will be Bowery and Stephens then I guess, i was hoping for a bit more on top of that to be honest.

It will be Bowery plus ANother and we are abandoning the Stephens hunt to "concentrate on more important matters". May be re visited at a later window.

Surely someone must want Hutton?

Spurs once paid £9m for him. We paid £4m for him. Surely someone can look at those figures and incorrectly deduce that he must have something about him?

Please?

Ive also heard from a very reliable source James Milner is in advance talks with the clubs representatives to come back to villa and will sign at exactly 10.59 & 30 secs on Friday 31st August.  You heard it here first  ;)

I've got a feeling we're going to sign Milner again before the window shuts. He'll definitely come back one day anyway

Isn't he dead or was it his partner in crime that snuffed it recently?

A midfielder and Benteke would represent good business.

I still feel there are too many 'meh' type mediocrities in our midfield. I'd rather have another name in the squad who you would think automatically is nailed on to start. Bannan and Delph will both be 23 by December, and unless things change in the next couple of months, I can't see either becoming that player you think 'yes, he's our first choice central midfielder'. Herd is already 23 and emerging as a decent Premier League player, but somebody to take us up a level? The jury is still out. As for Stephen Ireland, he's still an enigma and if he's going to be a regular starter you'd like to think we had somebody really solid alongside KEA to cover him.

Nenad Milijas has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent by Wolves, Could he do a job as a midfield anchor for us on a free?

Not for me. If we are going to sign any midfielders i'd like to see players who will improve the first eleven.I don't see Milijas being that man.

The one pleasing thing that I've noticed, is that we're not allowing teams to hold us to ramsom.
Went for Naughton, Spurs wanted silly money, within days Lowton was signed.
Went for Cresswell, Ipswich wanted silly money, Lambert goes and buys Bennett.
I'm sure Lamberts got an alternative to Betenke too, if Genk play silly devils.

I've just had a look at that Bentenke on YouTube. Whoever posted it hasn't done him any favours.

I think we were after Clyne too but dropped it when his agent was playing clubs off against eachother.
