the litmus test will not be this window. I think this window was about creating a base as opposed to bringing in finished goods. It's all good and well bringing in potential, but eventually, be it January or next summer Lambert will need to buy better, more established senior talent to move the needle. The players he has purchased so far will in my opinon create stability, and provide him with the energy and "hunger" that the club has been on about.

Disagree with that.

How do you build a base with players who aren't the finished product? Getting in only more inexperienced players in now is not going to provide stability - it is going to guarantee another poor season, and that's not going to help anyone out.

Just my opinion, but I think he's building a base of players that aren't the type of players that have caused us grief in the past 2 years. By getting rid of the likes of Collins, and hopefully Warnock and Hutton he's stabilising the club a little more. He wants all of the players pulling in the same direction. I'm not saying that we don't need senior players in the this window. In fact I've already stated we do. However, he clearly feels that the current senior players that have bought into his vision coupled with the new signings in addition to those departing guives him a better starting point than he had when he arrived. My point is that beyond this window we need to add better more established players or we won't keep progressing.

Agree with you here TLV.
Lambert is clearly trying to build a side in a similar way he did at Norwich - hungry players with potential who will buy into the cause and play the way he wants them to.
We've had plenty of "finished products" - "finished" being the operative word in many cases (Heskey, Harewood, Warnock, Hutton, Pires etc) - and they have been on shedloads of money for doing very, very little for the team/club.
It will take time for PL to develop HIS team and I think we need to have more faith in his decisions. He's clearly trying to improve on what we've got and we need to give him the time to do that even if it is a bit tough to take at present.

we will be relegated starting with Bowery next game .   Lets hope there is some proper signings.

Hands up if you're a better judge of young football talent than Paul Lambert!

The Fonz is not good enough for us . I bet If The Fonz played 87 games for Chesterfield he would score more goals than 10 , so dont completely understand it.  If it was like a Varney who had scored a  phenomenal  shit load of goals in the lower leagues I could completely understand the gamble .

As long as he signs some quality before Saturday I will be happy .   Quality that can start in the team and at least 3 players .

Works both ways, Sheffield fans said that Kyle Naughtan is way better than Kyle Walker and look how that's turned out.

It maybe PL's MO to go for young players from the lower leagues, but to do that alone is a very high risk strategy when our squad is so lacking in depth, proven top level ability and experience.  It's just possible that in this window he has no choice but to shop in the bargain basement because Lerner won't fund anything else.

As it happens I would not expect this lad Bowery to be the alternative to Benteke, that doesn't really make much sense.  But I'm not sure why we can't be looking at more bargain foreign deals, as with Vlaar and KEA, players like Michu - the economic crisis in Spanish football means there are some bargains to be had - or even loan deals like Carvalho, Garrido, Sahin, or even players like Fabio and Lukaku, where there's only a short term financial commitment, but it gives us experience until we have a chance to build around the new system.

thr other thing is, why go out and hire a reputable man like Henke to scout Europe if there wasn't a desire to use him? I'm sure he'll be set a task to not only find up and coming talent, but do what Newcastle have done and find established talented players for a very good price. All in good time.

But it's only the second signing from the lower leagues.

I'm not at all trying to be negative here, but I was just thinking back and wondering how many of these kind of signings have actually come off for us. Mark Delaney was about the last one that I can remember, that really did...

We haven't signed that many since Delaney. In fact, I can't immediately think of one between Michael Boulding and Enda Stevens.

Maybe he's signing players he'd identified as being players he wants to work with whilst at Norwich?

As for the foreign scout, surely it takes time to find players that match what PL wants.

Some people are very over critical and unrealistic it seems.

In the 70s and 80s lots of England strikers had played in Non-Lge or the 4th Division  -Withe,Mariner,Birtles,Regis,Keegan and Keith Leonard might have joined that list.

Youth teams were very different then. So was lower league football

Welcome Mr Bennett.

On the Bowery front, he is a million pound gamble but a fraction of the cost of a Heskey or Carew (in the last twelve months of his time with us) and probably a lot more use.

I just hope we don't miss out on a major target by a million...

Derby County and Nottingham Forest were winning the league, but that was the 70's, its over 30 years ago, things have changed
