My mate, who is a Oldham Athletic season ticket holder, just texted me this about Stephens;

"Mate, he's alright, but he's not a prem player i don't reckon. Too lightweight, got a good left boot. I'd say Fabian Delph is 5x better and I hate the cnut. He went missing when we were struggling, can't see him getting stuck in enough to unsettle prem midfields. I worry for both of us this year pal".

Nick
Is your mate judging him as a player when he played for Oldham or now at Charlton??

He is lightweight though. Needs to start lifting weights.

Goals look good, though and that quick little pass to lay on the third is a belter!  Hope we have got a good one, here.

I was impressed with that pass for the third too...that's the kind of ball I'd trip over and chip a tooth.

Good to see things picking up on here. I do like a big strong bugger up front. Someone that seemingly would be capable of physically holding his own against PL defenders.

I'll say this too. As much as I despise what he did and how he did it, I'd take Downing back at a cut rate price. He's better than any winger we have by a mile, and he's shown he can do it for us and especially sevicing Bent. He's clearly not in favour up there also. This is sport. If he apologised and said he's sorry for how it all ended then he's be a big step up on what we have. I realise this opinion won't be shared by everyone because he is a prick, but he can be a good player in the right environment. I also can't see it happening but most on this thread don't happen.

I'm with you ToLambo; I'm no fan of Downing the person but I'd have him back in our squad in a heartbeat.

We could really use Benteke's physique and - dare I say it - technique to occupy defences and make space for our midfield. If we go one up front, I'd go with him over Bent once he's settled in, he's much more suited to it.

Since someone's been brave enough to say they'd have Downing back, then I'll stick my neck out and say I'd hang on to Warnock until January at least.  He did a job in centre midfield towards the end of last season (not a great job, but he got stuck in against Bolton and gave us a bit of steel - or filth, whichever term you prefer) and he's got experience, which everyone seems to agree we're lacking.  If we did con MON into signing him this week, where does that really get us?  £3m if we're lucky, and where do we spend that in 5 days?  On another unproven Championship signing?  In the short term you could argue that the very average but experienced Warnock would be more valuable to us than a talented but untested youngster.  By all means sign a new full back for the future, but for now Warnock would give us a bit of back up at least.  It could be a tough few months, we might need him.  Don't get me wrong, the day he leaves I shall have an enormous party, but for the time being I'd hope PL could motivate him enough to be of some use.  Hutton, on the other hand, can f*** right off, I don't ever want to see him in a Villa shirt again.

Some people can't help themselves can they. I was seeing if for the reported €2 he was worth a shot to add a bit of trickery to the attack, and it already says he plays for us, brilliant.

There's something odd that two reputable managers have completely dismissed Warnock. Not just dropped him but gone as far as to tell him not to be around the first team. What possibly could he have done, not once, but twice to have that happen? Nobody wants to buy him either. This is a player that was in a World Cup squad only 2 years ago. He seems to have alientated his profession. I expect he'll be at the club after the deadline unless we essentially give him away, and he'll end up leaving when his contract expires. I hope I'm wrong off course.

That first paragraph has just made me almost choke with laughter.

His goals per game ratio for Bordeaux isn't too bad.

I'd imagine going off how he was for Oldham. They have been a struggling team for some time though, so it isn't a true guide.

Re Downing, I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

Been working tonight and it's been fairly exciting Christian Benteke seems on the move to B6 and most keen watchers of European Football seem to rate him. We seem to have put a bid in for Charlton midfielder Dale Stephens he comes fairly highly rated he looks a it of everything kind of player. Left back wise it appears Aaron Cresswell is still the obvious choice. Off to bed now and I want all three signed by the time I wake up.

Villa to sign three players in “one sleep”, you want to try hibernation.

Good morning campers, the sun is shining, the birds are twittering (and Joey) and we havent signed anyone overnight. Im off to the turf accountants later to put money on my Stefan Keissling I just have a feeling we have a chance with him.

Dont know a lot about the two currently in vogue but after some consideration I think we are going to sign..........
