How many teams play 'great' football and are a success with it? As for Norwich, they seemed to play counter attacking football everytime I saw them. I'm not arguing possession isn't important just that if that's the route you're going down you need players that can do it and Villa do not have them. Swansea finishing 9 points above the worst Villa season in many a year does not constitute success either. As for the Stoke v Barca comparison, yeh good one. That really is a basis for justifying an opinion.

I think it's fair to say sides who play ze gut fussball perform just as well at least as sides who take what they consider to be a 'pragmatic' approach. I also think it's fair to say which sets of fans would have more fun.

We have to accept it will take time. Even so I still think a target man style forward will be signed.

Re Cresswell, people seem to think he is nailed on forums. Having never seen him play, is he actually any good?

I think it will take time. I also agree that we can't discount the possibility of signing a big forward capable of beating defenders in the air and playing football (better than Grant Holt, in other words!). I got a bit excited at the Bentenke link, shame it was a load of old arsewater.

Cresswell is an attacking left-back in the mould that I think we all agree we'll need. He's looked very good at his level, but it will be interesting to see if he can step up.

I’d hope that the 6m which has been quoted is bollards.  I like the idea of signing from the lower leagues but the benefits are negated if Liverpool style fees are paid (Carroll/Henderson...).

If we’re after such players I think it is also a good opportunity to loan out our youth players as part of such deals.

I like the fact he is being likened to a young Leighton Baines. We were screaming out for a bit of width down the left on Saturday.

Gotta say, with Hutton, Warnock and dunne all heading out of the club - clearly PL has got a good grasp of who are the weak links. Gives me confidence that he can also spot a good player.

Baker is never a left back. Clark is much more comfortable out there. If we don't get a left back in and Warnock goes then I think we should swap 'em around. Then again, I'd prefer Lichaj to play.

I can only remember Clark playing left back once and he got torn apart by Kightley.

I think we'll struggle this season without decent full-back displays on a regular basis, it's such an important position these days. The only experienced ones we have; Warnock and Hutton are persona non grata.
The others are kids, however promising, and Cresswell, like Lowton would be coming from a lower league. It would be nice to have at least one specialist in the position who is experienced at this level.
