Lambert has said in the mail that we have no bids in place for anyone and that he is happy to go into Saturdays game with the squad we have.
Hopefully this is just public pr/chicken to agents and other clubs.
We are sill desperately short of depth. Got the feeling this transfer window is going to go down to the last day for our activity

It may be a case of availability and prices etc. Hopefully it's not down to having to sell more players. Given we're trying to shed Hutton and Warnock now, I'm a little worried they have to go before someone else comes in. But also, some players we've looked at (if you believe the papers) are being overpriced, like Cresswell at 6 million.

For now though I'd be more concerned about saturdays game. Get it out the way then get full steam back into getting players.

Have to say, I think you're right.

It'd also be strange to have publically ostracised Hutton and Warnock (although in the case of the first, I don't really care) and then go into the season with such a skimpy squad.

I like Lambert, he's a good manager and a good appointment, I think, but he has absolutely got to be backed.

That's what I don't understand. It's weird that he played Warnock in all our pre season matches and then suddenly dropped him entirely. That would suggest we have a left back imminent and that Warnock is Ovski (you would think) but now it looks like nothing is imminent, which makes this behaviour even stranger

We're treading water until they've all gone.

Davies, Sidwell, Carew, Luke Young, Nige, Heskey, Collins, Hutton, Warnock, Dunne.

7 down, 3 to go.

It's admirable that Randy has stuck to it really. Hopefully once that's over it really is the end of us paying inflated fees and wages for players before letting them go on the cheap.

A quick scan through that list (of the 7 sold so far) - £6.5m loss on Davies, £4.75m loss on Sidwell,  £5m loss on Carew (swap for Baros, valued at £5 wasn't he?), £3m loss on Luke Young, £8m loss on Nige, £3.5m loss on Heskey, £3m loss on Collins.

It's astronomical money and it's just not sustainable.

If we can't shift players for a decent fee then the manager will have to work with them. Simple as.

In the absence of any evidence to the contrary I think we have to assume that balancing the wage bill is still a core policy. If we also assume that it's now roughly where they want it to be that means players will have to go before others come in.

Similarly, if you look at where we've been shopping up to now the talk of signing players from Man City seems a little unlikely.

Those figures are a bit skew-iff.

For example, we paid 3.5m on Heskey, but he wasn't worth that much when he walked away for free, same with Carew and £5m. Collins also played near constantly, and we just got 2.5m for him.

The wages outlay for those players is scary too.

You have to factor in too the profits we made on Milner, Downing and Ashley Young who all I'm sure were also big wage earners. So it wasn't all one way traffic so you'd imagine we are a bit closer to an even keel now.

(swap for Baros, valued at £5 wasn't he?)

We might have all thought that (£2.50 per goal - great value) but I think the valuation was higher.....

Maybe I'm looking at it simplistically, I'm no accountant!

But from where I am, with the exception of Carew all of those players were made available for transfer in order to claw back some of the money invested into them before it got too disastrous.

Some of them were unable to be sold for a decent fee (Nige, Heskey), some were on such inflated contracts we had to essentially give them away (Sidwell and Shorey before that) and some were signed with the intention of them growing and improving with us, only for it to fail and us lose money on them (Collins and Davies).

We certainly overpaid for him too. But if he bags 20 this season and someone wants him they'll pay £20-25 for him.

That said, I reckon he'll be with us for a while unless a club around/below us want to spend big. Can't see a Champions League club being in for Bent.
