Douglas would be nice (not that I know much about him). Neil Taylor as a possibility for left back to go with the lad we're after from Ipswich. Unsure on midfielders, Charlie Adam (although I know that'll divide opinion) or perhaps even a late in the window loan move for Milner?

It's a defensive midfielder we need - we have Holman, Ireland, Bannan, Gardner and CNZ as attacking midfielders so I think we're well covered there.  Neither Adam or Milner are defensive.

El Ahmadi plays deep though, doesn't he? So someone who can win the ball further up the pitch maybe? Both of those players aren't shy of a tackle (although Adam gives away too many freekicks).

El Ahmadi
Milner - Holman
Ireland

Something like that, with Delph or Herd to come in if needed looks OK to me.

Suppose it depends how he sees Makoun too.

Even if we suspend disbelief for a second and imagine that Milner decides that he wants to leave the title holders as they attempt to win the Champions League how on earth does anyone expect us to match his wages?

Tottenham fans may have been saying the exact thing about Adebayor last season.

Still not convinced we need anither striker, despite accepting that an injury to bent could leave us relying on unproven players. (I think weimman would do ok given an extended run, however.)

If we are looking for one I'd hope it was a support strike type to compliment bent, as IMO the team should be set up to get the best out of him.

One worry I'd have with paying 2 up front is that I think our midfield migt not be strong enough for most PL teams without an extra man. We were very weak in the middle last seasonand it remains to be seen if Karim can fix this.

Pretty much agree about the striker.  We have 4, with a big question mark over the Fonz, which I think is enough if we play 1 up front.  In we go for a 2, then another may be needed, but not so much if we use the likes to N'Zogbia or Holman behind Bent.

However, I have less concerns about the midfield given the way we've been setting up during pre-season with a tight 4 in the centre.  The lack of width should be compensated for by attacking FBs and/or the 2nd striker pulling wide, but the 4 in the centre should stop us getting outnumbered and overrun as we've seen happen with a traditional 4-4-2.  In fact, I'd hope we'd be the ones doing the outnumbering and overrunning against sides playing with a 2 or a 3 in there.

Maybe your right about being more solid with a tighter midield but 2 seasons of watching even poor sides walk through us with ease has left me a nervous wreck. But I do have faith lambert knows what he's doing.

I don't think it'll happen either, if I was him I wouldn't want to leave. But they're in the market for players and if they add a couple of midfield players he may be available for a loan later in the window.

And now they're struggling to agree personal terms because of his wages...

I wouldn't want us to sign Milner anyway. He'd be too expensive and he doesn't play in a position where we are weak. We have a far more pressing need for another centre half, a left back or even a striker than yet another all-round midfielder. I just don't think he's the right player for us at the moment.

People need to let go of him, he's in the past.

I think we'd be much stronger with him in the side irrespective of who we have there now but I completely agree that we need to move on. Barring a miracle he ain't coming back.

I actually think we could really do with soeone like him in the middle. I think his energy really complimented the deep lying petrov. Not suggesting getting him bqck but someone like him with Karim could work well.

True, and I suspect he'd not want to come back anyway, but then again, where else would he get what Man City pay him?
