I'd say handing Clark the #6 shirt is a pretty good sign that he's convinced by his ability

Although I agree that Clark will have a big part to play under Lambert, when you think he also gave Hutton no2, I don't think that's the best indicator!

EDIT: OK, who put the word filter on for B E R T I E?? >:(

A fine gentleman whoever did it. If you try and get around it I'm going to lobby to have you permabanned, Joncrete M.

Given the Gabby injury and the possible need to get a new striker in, balanced against the risk of giving a long contract to someone who might be seen as "cover", wouldn't it make sense to look at getting John Guidetti in on loan, if (if) he's available?

If we could get a decent striker in on loan would probably be the best option all round.

A season long loan would save us money on buying a striker and would provide the cover we need in the squad whilst we develop Weimann and Delfouneso into regular playing EPL strikers and also give us time to see how Gabby does this season. I was thinking maybe we could bring in an elder established striker on a short term contract but a loan deal would be a better deal as long as they are proven at getting goals.

Step forward Lukaku
I think Lukaku would be a great loan signing, he's going to be a beast of a player but just needs games.

That slightly misleading, Hutton was 2 anyway, Lambert has promoted Clark up to 6, that's very different.

For a striker or CB I think the key is, we either need someone world class (or at least with the potential of becoming world class) or we need someone happy to rotate with the youngsters.  Players like Fletcher are a waste of time, they would want regular starts and would just be in the way of our youngsters.  Lukaku would be perfect for the first category at least (so would de jong who I really wanted).

I think Guidetti would be an excellent addition to the squad.  Although as we've learnt grooming other PL players on loan is a double edged sword, so a transfer would be the only way I'd like to see him come in.  City look as though they are being asked to trim their squad so a cheeky punt might be worth it.
He looks incredibly comfortable on the ball, good awareness, he plays with his head up, good positional sense, and seems a bright enough lad...yes please.

Guidetti is out injured for the foreseeible future isn't he?

I think we would need to try and buy him first. If City refuse, then try to loan him with a clause containing an agreed fee.

I'm not sure if Lambert is convinced by Delfouneso, he gave Holman the number 14 which the Fonz for the last couple of years.

The best thing Lambo could do would be cash in N'Zog for another striker: £6m in and Rhodes available.

I don't think we should buy a forward just now. See how it goes in the short term and wait until we're in a position of strength.

Sturridge, Guidetti or Lukaku on loan would be grand.

We need another defender and midfielder though.

Douglas would be nice (not that I know much about him). Neil Taylor as a possibility for left back to go with the lad we're after from Ipswich. Unsure on midfielders, Charlie Adam (although I know that'll divide opinion) or perhaps even a late in the window loan move for Milner?

Probably reading a bit much into that, I'm sure I've seen Holman wearing 14 on a lot of the videos of him (was 27 with AZ though) so he probably asked for the number and fonz agreed to let him take it.

Not worth a thread so putting this here

Paul Lambert has backed Stephen Ireland to bring a creative spark to Villa's play this season.

Lambert is determined to get the best out of the Irish midfielder, insisting he has the ability to unlock opposition defences.

The Villa boss has been impressed with the contributions of Ireland and Charles N'Zogbia during pre-season so far.

Former Manchester City ace Ireland overcame a difficult first season in claret and blue to win the Supporters' Player of the Year award last term.

"He's a real talent, there's no doubt about that," said Lambert.

"It shows when he plays because there is a lot of creativity there, just like Charles.

"They are both really talented footballers.

"We will try to get the best out of them because they are very very clever footballers.

"We've got to get him in positions where he can hurt teams.

"I've got a fair idea of what I want to do with it.

"From the time I have been at the club I've not had any problem with Stephen, or Charles whatsoever."

Lambert hailed the effort and application shown by the players since he took charge.

The manager admits he couldn't ask for anything more from his squad during the pre-season campaign.

"I've got no problems with any of the lads here, they are a good group.I'm delighted with what they've given," he added.

"When I first got here I was never quite sure what I was going to get out of them because I don't know them.

"I didn't know them as people or as footballers but I can't ask for anything more from their attitude or the way they've been performing or their jobs in pre-season.

"The results are not the main thing for me it's to get them into that way of playing, making them feel good and ready for the season.

"I think they've been excellent."
