Don't think we could et that sort of deal for Carroll. I read that Wham would be obligated to buy him if they stayed up this seaon.   Bit of a gamble as the loan might not work out then you still have to shell out for him.

That's the deal Liverpool want now and are playing hardball over it.  But wait until the last week of August when they're still stuck with a player thye don't want and see what happens then!

I'm not suggesting it as a transfer strategy for us, just pointing out that the deal Liverpool would be willing to accept, for whoever Carroll ultimately goes to, will start to look much more tempting the closer we get to transfer day.

It will be interesting to see which way Lambert goes on this one.

I would be more inclined to go for a second striker type player- i.e. someone creative who would play in behind Bent. Such as Sessegnon (although I doubt he's available). That'd also give more flexibility in playing 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 as such players are often suited to playing wide as well.

I suspect Lambert will go for more of a target man to suit his preferred 4-1-2-1-2 diamond-thingy formation.

I was watching the Olympic game last night and it occurred to me that the reason we haven't signed a LB yet may be because two of our targets are playing in the tournament?  We wanted Bertrand on loan and that may not be totally dead yet, plus Neil Taylor is also a popular and logical choice.  So perhaps the LB slot is one we won't see filled until after the Olympics?  Even if it turns out to be Cresswell, we're probably waiting for all options to be fully investigated and can't/won't talk to players or their agents while they're still playing.

This makes sense to me, we've 'lost' 2 central defenders this summer and only really replaced 1 (there's an argument that Lowton is replacing Cuellar but not taking hutton to the US suggests that was more a case of getting the replacement in first).
