I agree with paul_e's thoughts on Dunne, but I don't want to keep Collins either. There's much to admire about him but he goes to the ball more readily than Cinderella and it winds me up.

Being greedy, I hope Vlaar AND another centre half are coming in and Dunne and Collins can do one.
Say... Vlaar, AN Other (Ramis or Douglas?), Clark, Baker with Lowton and Williams as further cover would do nicely.

I know very little about Vlaar really, but he seems the right sort of player in the right position, so again another good transfer move by our new manager.

If this happens, then he's addressed CB, RB and DCM for a relatively small spend.  I'd imagine LB will be next and the whole lot will be done for about £15m or less, which should be a net spend of below £10m if we can then shift one or two out.  And wages wise we'd probably be in no worse a position either.

After that, I think he'll look to the forward line, which neatly fits with him having had a good chunk of pre-season to evaluate the under performers in that area of the team from last season.  We all knew the back line needed rebuilding, but there's a few more question marks further forward as to how much was down to the players as opposed to TSM.

Regarding Caroll, I saw that Newcastle have had a loan bid rejected so It would appear that any deal must involve money

I think with Newcastle in particular, it would stick in Liverpool's craw if they send him back there on the cheap after giving them so much money for him.
Maybe they still owe Newcastle a wedge and will write it off or, on our behalf, maybe they still owe us some of the Downing money we could write off?

There's no doubt in my mind Liverpool would rather sell and give Rodgers the cash to spend but getting an acceptable offer vice what they paid will be very difficult. They'd have to choke on at least more than half what they paid.

Attacking wise he's probably looked at Ireland, N'zogbia, Bent, Holman and Gabby and thought "on paper" that isn't a bad selection of senior pros, supported by the the Albrighton et al.

So no doubt he'll see how they perform in the next couple of weeks and then add to it.

I was just looking at that Feyenoord forum, translated by Chrome, and spotted this which made me laugh (the bit about Ireland) but also cheered me, with the "well scouted" remark.

In principle, the qualities to do well at Aston Villa, he will largely have to compete against big, strong strikers and there are his qualities. Vlaar I wish this transfer. Also I find it amazing that two of those injuries after he has achieved yet. This shows his mentality. Aston Villa is a nice club and has a good striker Agbonlahor (which some final steps to make) and Ireland with a fantastic midfielder (who is mentally too short unfortunately). The position they took last year was a disgrace. I think in terms of mentality Vlaar, El Ahmadi and Holman who now sits, which can add to that team, but are three types of players who never never never give up. In that respect, well scouted.

From Yellow "can Vlaar way for limited transfer"

The departure of Feyenoord captain Ron Vlaar to Aston Villa seems imminent. Technical director Martin van Geel had to RTV Rijnmond know the central defender like to upgrade to the English club. "Ron was in Birmingham yesterday and he wants to continue his career there." Van Geel also tried in vain to the summer of 2014 to extend the current contract of Vlaar. "Last week we talked with Ron to break open his contract, but that was not an option," continues the technical policymaker of the locals. The commitment of Vlaar says he may leave for a limited transfer to Feyenoord. "The level of that amount we do not comment, but it certainly does to millions. Should it survive, we will not initially seek out a replacement. " Feyenoord hopes later this week to welcome Omar Elabdellaoui in De Kuip. The Norwegian midfielder for one season loan from Manchester City. It is not yet known whether the country was enjoying the fresh acquisition Harmeet Singh in the helicopter will take place during the traditional Open Day.

Topdeal for aston villa, 6.8 million for karim and Vlaar

Also this (which includes some nice machine translating)

That would be nice ****** when it comes to 4 million. Are you good with it. What a bargain for Villa. Your two best players sell for less than 7 million. Nice acted.

That's Di Stefano and Gento.  We are signing legends besides good players from the Dutch league.

Back to Vlaar - don't read too much into the defensive performances of the dutch at the euro's I think their issues were, as is often the case with the dutch, team spirit related rather than anything to do with the abilities of the individuals.

exactly , Van persie sums it up .  Awesome for Arse , Heskey-esque for Holland.
