Look, the relative merits of Gabby and Bent have been done to death, and we all know where each other stands on it. As a Villa fan, all I want is for one or preferably both of them to be rip-roaring successes for us.

What pisses me off is expressing an opinion that has been arrived at by watching them play football, and some fucking idiot coming on here telling me that I've based it on some abstract concept like how much he cost or didn't cost, or who he supports, or that I don't think it at all, and am in fact lying.

 So fucking patronizing.

You don't have to post or read what I write, and my original post was from my phone on the previous page, as such I had not read who wrote what on the pages previous, it is tedious to look and be able to read so I just posted. Had I seen, I probably would not have done, but I am entitled to my opinion that people who defend Gabby so strongly are swayed in part by his history with the football club, and to say they don't they are kidding themselves, again in my opinion. The fees was brought up by you about us wanking over the amount Bent cost, which is strange, as I have been really pleased we are not spending that sort of money this summer and are trying to buy separately.

I know for a fact I give academy players a lot more slack, and time than I do players we buy. It is the nature of following players through the youth that there is more of an attachment to wanting a player to perform well, and more time will be given to see them reach what you hope they will. The flip side is that by the age he is now, Gabby is not the player I hoped he would be, which is actually nothing to do with Bent.

So because you think like that, I must or I'm kidding myself. Yeah, much less patronizing that, ta.

I pretended you only rate Bent because of the fee to illustrate how pathetic such an assertion would be. As pathetic as the assertion that people base their opinion of Gabby on him being 'one of us' or whatever. In actual fact, I credit you with enough intelligence to believe that you base your opinion purely on abilty, and enough honesty to believe what you post is what you really think, and not some bizarre lie. Maybe I should rethink that, what d'you reckon.

So you would prefer Heskey over Gabby then I presume, who pre 30's was all round an excellent footballer?

It is a fallen argument about his fee, his fee was too high, but 9 in 13 saved us from relegation. Or are you going to ignore that?

Gabby was a very promising kid, but Houllier was right, he has bulked too much and lost his biggest weapon to some extent. Centre halves kept up with him last season, and he was more effective from the wing.

Also, how does the fee argument you are pushing equate with my argument that had Gabby cost 10 million we would be wanting him sold now? The fact is we all, me included, find it hard to accept Gabby is not the player we hoped he would be. He was diabolical last season and little better the season before.

Additionally, Bent is not as bad a footballer as people make out.

What ?
He had just turned 31 when he joined us and had been a waste of space long before that.

But been picked how many times by world class managers at Liverpool and for England because of what he offers to a team? And named by a guy who has scored 40 goals for England as his best strike partner. I am no fan, and he was a stupid buy as we did not need his type of player, but his all round play when he was younger was better than Gabby's.

Yes he was a stupid buy and I'm no fan of his either. There is a big difference between his all round play being better than Gabby's and being an all round excellent player.
It mesmerizes me to this day how he got so many caps for England, and how he got so many starts for us and I don't think I have ever seen a bigger waste of space divide opinion like he does.
I guess I'll never see what the attraction was with Emile Heskey.

I take it there aren’t any rumours at the moment - The last time I checked we were talking wrestlers and now the Bent v Gabby debate?

(apologies for not taking the time to read all the inbetween pages)

Yeah but try and show a little sympathy, Percy; Gabby shagged Ozzjim's cat. Stop rubbing his nose in it!

Post match interview by Matt Kendrick included asking if we were looking to loan Andy Carroll, PL wouldn't rule it out.

Not quite, but as you like.

If Albrighton is out for 3 months, and we are going to play with width, a winger may be a bigger priority than it was you would think.

Will depend a lot on what else he thinks we need.  If money is tight and he has plans for the positions we need cover in we could cope with nzog and one from carruthers, gabby, weimann or holman.  It sounds like he's back in late september, so only 6-7 matches, if it was until christmas it might need to treated more seriously but I think we'll be fine.

I remember a Charlton fan saying that bent was the type of player who couldn't create for himself and so it has been proven. He isn't a great footballer but he has the knack of being in the right place at the right time. And scores goals. You can't argue with that stat. Clive Allen wasn't a good all round footballer and relied on chances being created for him. So, did Gary Lineker and Andy Cole. Criticising bent for his football is pointless because all he has to do is point to his goals record.

As for Gabby, no he hasn't been good at all over the past couple of seasons, but who has? he started brilliantly last season until he got injured. Then two successive managers haven't been able to get more consistency from him. He was played out of position a lot too. As for the last two seasons were rarely got the ball to our forwards in dangerous areas nullifying any threat. the same under Houllier when we had so many injuries we rarely imposed ourselves.

As for Weimann, he might come good, might not. We'll see.

If we do get Carroll I would hope a fee could be agreed to buy him next summer. Would also need good delivery from out wide. Phillips and Snodgrass linked again today.
