We've been linked with a player called Tongo Hamed Doumbia. After reading up about him he sounds like a good player and it would probably be the final nail in Makoun's coffin. Doumbia is a 22 year old (turns 23 in August) defensive midfielder who plays for Rennes. He's 6'3", pacy and a good passer. Played alongside M'Vila. Doumbia was being linked with a move to Arsenal last November with the papers speculating that he was a rising star and would cost £8m. However, if there's anything to the rumour (could easily be BS), we might get him for £2m.

Talisman, my arse. On the basis of last season he couldn't inspire Shane McGowan to go to the pub.

I'd still be willing to give him one more season, unless someone bid at least £8m. However, if he underperforms for a third successive season, under yet another new manager, we'd have to assume it's his fault, not the manager's, and sell him.

He's as much a striker as he is a right back.

I dunno, the way he just hoofs the ball up field you would think he was going for goal.

Source - someone on another forum re-posting something from Twitter. Can't exactly take it to the bank but it was a new name on me so I was interested to find out a bit more. It was also in the context of that Brahami signing in the next couple of days. The talk of Brahami started out in similar circumstances - a rumour about someone most of us won't have heard of but it seems to have something to it.

Doumbia and Brahami would be a nice double-deal.

From wikipedia:

Yacine Brahimi (Arabic: ياسين إبراهيمي‎; born 8 February 1990) is a French football player who currently plays for English club Aston Villa in the Barclays Premier League]. He plays as an attacking midfielder and a winger and is described as a "technically gifted player". His coach, Frédéric Antonetti, has declared that Brahimi will be the "future play-maker of Stade Rennais".[1]

Why do people feel the need to reach such black and white conclusions? Players are always either 'not good enough' or 'brilliant'.

Well said Matt. It's about time somebody with a clue posted.

Why do people have to insult other posters as clueless?
It's a message board to express an opinion and make a clear statement that's all.

I don't think Gabby's finished.

But -like Delph- where we go from here will depend so much on his mindset, how hungry he is to kick on at VP.

Sounds an obvious thing, I know.  But just because he's a local lad doesn't automatically mean he won't have thoughts about leaving.  His nose was put out of joint with the signing of Bent, and since GH's stint at the club he's largely been playing wide.

I can understand his frustration to a degree, but with Bent injured last season he had an extended opportunity to play in his favoured role. He didn't take that opportunity, in fact he turned in some of his worst performances for the club during that period.

I'm prepared to accept that a lot of that might be down to having an absolute duffer of a manager, a guy so unfamiliar with the opposition's penalty area he'd need maps to get there. So this season is a clean slate - for just about all of our attack minded players.  But another season like the last two and it will be difficult to continue to make excuses for him.

Could we not get Bertrand on loan? It's not like he'll get loads of games ahead of Cole

According to one of the Sunday's today, Di Matteo has been quoted as saying he wants to keep him and play him in the cups whilst resting Cole. I only saw him play in the CL final and he looked out of his depth but that's not to say he's not a fine player.

This would be exactly the type of player I've been saying that Villa could do with.  Him and El Ahmadi as the two holding players would free up the likes of Ireland, Holman, N'Zogbia to attack without having to defend too often.  I know absolutely nothing about this player, but his height, passing ability and strength would be ideal.
