Don't get me wrong, I'm not against Championship players, far from it, I just don't want to flood the team with them, Under GH it proved playing young / inexperienced players can cause problems.

Marquee I mean people like A Johnson, I would be excited by someone like him (provided he's not coming for money reasons)
Andy Johnson?

 ;)

A player not coming for  the money? - you're having a larf with athat sort of expectation ...

Cascarino seemed quite a marquee signing at the time.
My memory of that time was that we'd signed the wrong guy, and it was rather depressing.
Do we have to include Downing as he was an England international?
You don't have to include anyone, it's all about opinions.
But - IMHO, no: Downing was a useful addition but not a season-changer.

I don’t know, maybe missing out on the Euros will make him think that he’d have a more satisfying/complete career if he was playing regularly.  Alternatively he’s probably happier that he had an extra couple of weeks on the lash on the med.

Luc Nilis- certainly what might have been. His goals collection on that YouTube video are something else. I remember going mental after that Chelsea goal and ending up two rows in front of mine (blame the few too many jars prior)

I was at that game and remember being mesmerised with him. The movement, touch. He was like our own version of Bergkamp. The thing is we also had Merson, so we missed out on those two brilliant footballing talents doing their thing together.

Compare the videos of Nilis with the ones on youtube of Yacine Brahimi, looks like he could be a very raw younger player of Nilis style - not saying he will be prolific as Nilis but he certainly shows some promise and some natural shooting ability.

if i'm being honest i dont think the villa have ever signed a marquee player, a player of renown and at the top of his game that a few of the top clubs have also wanted, a gasgoine, a bergkamp, a shearer or the ilk, we've only ever signed decent players when nobody else wanted them, thats hardly marquee is it

GRRRRR   One fine day of summer and suddenly we're off on a discourse  about marquees or TENTS!

What about some proper marques for a change

Rant over and breathe.....

As good a player as Dion was for us, I don't think a 'marguee' signing can ever come from Coventry!

I think I remember Ron saying "he was a Christmas present for the fans"

On the subject of our marquee signings...does Peter Withe count?

Seen as the final piece of the jigsaw and cost a club record £500,000...the rest as they say is history.

Luc Nilis really excited me when we signed him despite being no spring chicken, although I think I was in the minority at the time.

What might have been ....

Rud Van Nistlroys favorite player/partner. When you think of some of his strike partners that's some compement.

Playes I have been genuinely really excited about when we signed them:

Earl Barrett
Dean Saunders
Andy Townsend
Stan Collymore
Saca Curcic
Dion Dublin
Paul Merson
Mark Draper
Darren Bent
John Carew

Bent, Milosevic, Draper, Saunders, Collymore, Angel.

Odd when you think about it that the only manager we've had that had some really serious money to spend was MON, and I don't think he got one out of your seat signing.

Young was for a while but was young and raw when signed. I get the feeling Lambert is trying to get value in functional positions, right back, holding midfield, even a gamble on a winger and left back etc, to allow him to sign a couple of bums on/ off seats players, maybe a top winger and striker that could play with Bent. I really like the strategy of good age, cheap, with experience and quality to make the step up. It is smart.

Personally I was buzzing when we signed Milner.
