Over the years we've signed plenty of players that have have excited me, but genuine marquee players? Only Bent and collymore imo.

This has got me thinking about our marquee signings in my time.

Andy Gray second time around when he had just won the title at Everton.
Bringing Sid back from Italy.
Cascarino seemed quite a marquee signing at the time.
Ray Houghton after all he had won at Liverpool.
Deano.
Andy Townsend.
Collymore.
Merson and possibly Dublin around the same time too.
Ginola, even though personally I was underwhelmed from day one.
Angel.
Arguably Baros.
Arguably Carew.
Do we have to include Downing as he was an England international?
Definately Bent.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against Championship players, far from it, I just don't want to flood the team with them, Under GH it proved playing young / inexperienced players can cause problems.

Marquee I mean people like A Johnson, I would be excited by someone like him (provided he's not coming for money reasons)

Oh and Bent was pretty amazing as was Collymore but I also liked Saunders and Carew

So, if we have sniffed around Luuk de Jong we're clearly after a high calibre striker. Possibly a young up and coming star. So is that instead of one of our own (and if so, which one) or additional to?

It will be interesting to see if a deal can be resurrected with Twente lowering their asking price and if not, who is next?

But who was suggesting we flood the team with championship players? Genuine question as I don't ever recall that being put up as a suggestion.

Would guess a new striker would be additional to Bent, Gabby and Weimann.  Looking at those three, we are missing a big physical presence up front who can hold the ball up and bring others into play.  I think all three of our strikers would work well off that type of forward and Lambert has signed that type of player before.  I would have loved us to sign the Croatian striker Mandzukic who did well in the Euros, but he has gone to Bayern Munich.  Another dream signing dashed!!

I'd love us to nab Osman from Everton, always thought he was a good player and it was show the club was ambitious.  If ever a player deserved an England cap.

Does anyone remember luke Nillis I thought he was pretty good for the short time he played for us, before his injury stopped him.

Luc Nilis really excited me when we signed him despite being no spring chicken, although I think I was in the minority at the time.

What might have been ....

No one suggested it Ger regan, I'ts my own personal view, we've been linked with a few and I'm just saying I don't mind one or two but don't want to go mad, Im more interested in what maz said about players such as Luuk de Jong, Anyway according to SSN we've approached Sheff Utd for that kid

I think Luc Nilis was a brilliant signing at the time.  That goal against Chelsea showed his class but the way he moved in that match, finding space etc. would have been great for the younger players at the time to have worked alongside.

All dashed that afternoon at Portman Road.
