It's been said before, by many, but when have Villa actually ever signed a true marquee player?

Dion Dublin was pretty good at the time we signed him... maybe Ginola?

Ginola was as big as a marquee when we signed him.

Dean Saunders was a pretty big signing at the time, I remember.  Darren Bent just as big.

But if a marquee player is an established big-name near the top of his game - I don't think we've signed one in my lifetime.

For me Saunders was a signing I really got excited about. Collymore too thinking about it.

As good a player as Dion was for us, I don't think a 'marguee' signing can ever come from Coventry!

Bent was the last one and I'd say Collymore before him.

Mat Kendrick reckons we're looking at Sheffield United right back/centre half/defensive midfielder/gas fitter/signwriter/special constable Matthew Lowton.

I got halfway through that description and thought we were about to sign Joe Cocker
I glanced over your quote and thought we were going to sign reo Coker

Bent was a marquee signing in every sense. Not every day that you sign one of the most prolific scorers in PL history in his prime. Saunders was great at the time and proved to be every bit as good as we thought he'd be. Stan was everything we wanted when he signed. Just never worked out for a million reasons.

Baros? Hadn't he just had an amazing spell at the Euro's?

Baros had that great Eurpean Champuionship 12 months before we signed him and had then nicely slotted back into his bit part role with the Scousers.

correct - it was underwhelming.

Saunders, Draper, Collymore, Milner (2nd time) and Bent. I know Draper and Milner were not marquee (whatever that means) but they were absolutely spot on for what we needed at the time.
