Hasn't Murphy signed for someone now?

Blackburn

2 year deal - which I am very happy to have dodged

Murphy seems to be one of these players that have adopted their game well as he got older.
Does a useful Job. But, if he was that good still surely Fulham would have kept him.

Or someone better than Blackburn would have signed him.

Or maybe the fact that at 35 he needed a pension top up and Blackburn offering £2.5m a year swung it?

That's exactly the type of deal we are rightly avoiding!

Surely we are getting the stakes of desperation if we think that Danny Murphy is a viable option for Villa? Hungry?  Young? Thanks to Rovers for doing the rest of us a favour.

I don't think Murphy would have been such a bad move until you consider that he's going to be picking up £50k a week for 2 years at the age of 35. Then you realise that Blackburn must be crazy.

Blackburn's craziness started with getting rid of one of the most respected chief executives in the game and one of the best managers of that size of club in the game. They let Jason Roberts go and score goals to get Reading promoted rather than save them from relegation because another game would have activated a contract extension. They have let a number of older/higher earners go like Nelson who QPR have snapped up and then they do this. Murphy has been great for Fulham but at 35 they obviously realise this is the time to let him go.

It's mental for a Championship side to be paying that.

It must be coming out of the kitty they set aside for Beckham and Ronaldinho's wages when Venkys first took over.

It was just an example anyway. The type of profile of the player was my point I suppose.
Yes it's worth getting a player at that stage of his career if he was really still high enough profile and good enough to compensate for his... ageing. Take Pirlo for example.

I don't think Murphy is what we need.

I reckon Van Bommel might be shipped off from Bayern soon and I think he could have the impact you’re (rightly) suggesting.  Flammini might be an option too, less of a statement but I think he’s a bit younger.

I agree. I reckon he will leave last summer, play for AC Milan for a year, get released and then sign for PSV.

van Bommel in his prime walks into just about any PL team. Today's version, slower and not as motivated is a red card waiting to happen for a lot of money. He'll still do well in slower paced leagues like Italy, but he'd be found out in the PL.

Van Bommel looked well past it in the Euro's. I think he's a nasty player at his worst too. His lack of pace and mobility will get found out and as said, it'll be a red waiting to happen.

Van Bommel has already signed for PSV for 1 year and will then retire.
