we need depth and quality. Whittingham isn't a kid anymore and irrespective of what one might think of his ability he has more experience than players that may very well one day be a lot better than him. We shouldn't expect all of PL's signings to be "straight into the first XI" material, but I do expect over the course of the summer we'll get some of those along with good, hard working squad players that will do a proper job when they come on, or when the team is rotated. The squad will be built in no particular order and if a number of the early deals are of the squad filler type we shouldn't shit our pants. With the Euros on, top players at the tournament either playing or away on vacation, agents tied up with those players, manager's and staff away, it will take time for some of the bigger deals to come together.

I'm glad you feel the same GordanCowansIsTheGreatest. Lets improve our quality, replace anybody that leaves, and then start looking to strengthen the squad.

I'm not sure the lack of squad players such as Peter Whittingham was the reason we were still fighting the drop in April.

The problem we have had the past two seasons is that injuries to experienced players have left us relying on the younger players for considerable periods of the season.  During those periods in the past two seasons, we have tumbled towards the relegation zone.  With that in mind, I personally would be looking at building a solid squad first and foremost.  Once we have a solid squad, then I think we should be looking to add the quality players who can take us to the next level.

With a bit more quality in midfield to both supply Bent and protect the defence we could have had at least four extra wins (I'm thinking QPR, Swansea, Wolves at home and Wigan away, not to mention West Brom at home and possibly Fulham away) under our belt by the time Bent got injured. That's 8 extra points which is significant and would have pretty much seen us safe. I think Gardner, Bannan, Caruthers, Herd, Weimann, Baker etc would have been much more comfortable coming into a side that was already safe. We must remember, they were thrown in at the deep-end of a relegation scrap .

Plus, we should remember that those players all have a year's (tough) experience under their collective belts now. I stick to my original point, if we have some money to spend we should sign some genuine midfield quality and replace bodies that leave with Bosmans/loans.

There's no way Dave Whelan would let him join a small outfit like villa ;

 Was a highly rated youngster a couple of seasons ago then he joined err... Wigan (?) Maybe a good move I suppose to show he can hack it in Premier League. Would be happy with him or M.Phillips. BTW has Moses switched his allegiances yet to play for a different country? Or still an England hopeful?

I'd ike Hoillet too. Think it's prove to be a cheaper deal than Moses also.

Correct me if I'm wring but hasn't he said he won't be signing a new contract at Wigan!? If so he wouldn't even command a big fee. Sign him up!!

When i've seen him in the Championship he does stand out,but its not guaranteed that he'd be a success in the PL. I'd much rather see if Lambert can get more out of Albrighton,and see Carruthers get more time on the pitch.
