Anita  can also play left back
Well maybe she can but never mind all that! What I wanna know is: does she, ya know...'go a bit'?  ;)

If we get the chance to I'd drop Given like yesterdays garbage! There's plenty of resources at this club in terms of wages paid, but we don't get particularly good value for money. We could easily bring in a very good goalkeeper on half Given's wage, on top of which they'd be younger, less injury prone and maybe capable of claiming a cross. If you then consider that in wage terms we could put the remaining half of his salary towards another decent player or combine it with Heskey's wages to get a top class player, then this is a no-brainer as far as improving the squad goes. Cheerio Seamus...

It is, of course, ever so easy to get rid of your best player and replace him with someone on half the wages.

Crikey, you make it all sound so very easy.

When your best player is over rated and not very good then actually yes it is! ;-)

Dave - I think in Given's case it might be a little easier to do than it would be with someone like Bent.

Of course, that's why clubs do it all the time. I'm amazed how Paul Lambert got the job ahead of you.

I would say Given, considering his age and the size of his contract, is actually a bit of a liability long term. He even is he has 1 good and 1 ok season, at 38-39 by the 4th year of his deal, he is still costing us 6 more million. If we were offered 4 now, it would both gain that 4 million and save us a further 12. Looking at the keepers released this summer, I reckon you could pick one up that would do as good a job as Given for about half the money he will cost us over the next 4 years, and still have the potential for another 4.

Thanks for the snide comment. This is such a no brainer that you don't need to be a football genius to see it makes sense though. There's at least 10 keepers in England the actual equal of Given and not all of them are on his astronomical wages. That's before you even go scouting abroad... Hopefully Lambert will see it this way too as it makes a lot of sense in terms of maximising our resources...

Of course it's a no-brainer. In fact, we should do it for all the team. Get rid of them all and bring in someone better for cheaper in every position. That makes me eleven times the genius you are.

Nice. See what you've done there. If you extend my argument to ridiculous lengths, you think that it disproves it. Of course you can't do it eleven times and of course you're not a genius. But in this case we have an over-rated over paid player clearly on the slide and apparently a club that appears foolish enough to take him off our hands. In addition our dear neighbours have a keeper who most would think is of a similar and arguably better standard and they're crying out for cash... Seems pretty obvious and doesn't require too many acts of genius to me...

Yes, all we have to do is sell a player for a certain amount then make sure we can buy another, his club don't want as much for him as we've just sold the player he'll be replacing for, nobody else wants to buy him, he asks for less wages than his predecessor was getting (both selling club and new player's agent of course never thinking of pointing out to us that as he's taking the place of said previous player we must think he's better and therefore should pay more for him). Piece of piss.

Well if you look at the figures that ozz has quoted above there's a pretty big margin for error here.

I've clearly caught you in somewhat belligerent form though. Maybe you're not enjoying the Euros or something. Let's just say that I think it would make sense to do and that it would be realistic to try. You don't think it can be done. I understand nothing is black and white but I believe the odds would favour us. We'll agree to differ though - wouldn't want you raising your blood pressure...

Yes, it does seem strange how you think you catch everyone in a bad mood. Have you stopped to think why?

RE Whittingham... I'd not be unhappy with him coming back. We need goals from midfield and he is a much better player than we sold. So long as the price is right I wouldn't be disappointed.
