There is one huge difference between the mule and Holt. One does actually hit the net. If we paid 4 million, and his contract cost 5 over three years, it would be 9 million. If he scored 30 goals for that, in comparison to some of our other signings it would be decent value for money. I don't want him, I would prefer someone younger and not resembling Richard Dunne up front, but I can see the point.

How about £20k basic plus 5k a goal? Over 2 years with an optional third.

I'm sure Villa must have some sort of attraction to certain players (like Holt) where financial gain isn't always the motivation behind the move.

Some posters have been talking like we have already signed him.  I see no  problem with talking about it in a thread like this, but it seems strange that everyone who thinks he's 'nailed on' also thinks it would be a bad move.

I think PL will see that major surgery is needed in defence,and some in midfield,so I'd be surprised if he used some of the funds on Holt,if he was a couple of years younger,but not at his age.

I've no problem signing these players, but, how well do the posters of these names know the players mentioned?
I've heard of most of these players, but, apart from the odd international, club highlight or you tube clip I don't know a great deal about them.
Das Bost is an example. Yes, I've heard of him, he's obviouly a good player, but apart from a couple of clips I've never seen him play. Would he fit in at Villa? Would he complement Bent or would his style not work? 
Obviously the scouts would watch them for several games, but, what do the posters base their assumption that they would be good for Villa?
Do they watch them on a regular basis?
Is it word of the media?
Or, is it that they are a good player on FIFA 
I'm not knocking the posters, I'm just interested in their knowledge of the foreign market, as to be honest mine is pretty poor these days.

Can't speak for others but I don't think anybody is claiming scouting expertise by throwing a name into the hat on an Internet forum.
I'm sure we've all watched enough football over the years to know what constitutes a good player, at least in our own opinion. It's a discussion forum and it does exactly what it says on the tin.

Of course, those who work within the game would monitor and investigate a potential signing far more than we would, their reputations and jobs depend on it.

 I've read enough bullshit on forums in the fields I actually have a working knowledge in to know that you should take them all with a huge pinch of salt anyway.
