Frimpong on loan might be an option (he should be fit for the start of the season)?

Certainly very impressed with him at Wolves.

but a big no to Holt. We have Bent and Weimann...

And that's it though apart from an out of form Gabby.  Part of our downfall in the past few seasons has been strength in depth, especially when Bent got injured.  We cant pin our hopes on a player coming back from a bad injury and a kid and we shouldn't turn our noses up at a player who got 17 goals last season, who is available and who the gaffer knows well.
I agree Dave. Earlier in this thread I posted:
"I think a few of you are doing a disservice to Holt
Granted (ho ho) I've only seen bits of him on MotD and when Norwich came to Villa Park but he seems to have a bit more about him than a 'lump up front' that you hoof the ball to.
He's scored some pretty decent goals, not just far post stab ins, his one at VP was a well taken one."

Although I do feel, maybe, at 31 he might not fit our 'younger' image.
As you say, though, at the right price we shouldn't turn our noses up at him.

If he was cheap I'd be delighted with Holt, but he isn't so I feel transfer funds could be better spent elsewhere. For instance, we need pretty much an entirely new back four.

I wouldn't be delighted if cheap, but I take your point. He wouldn't be cheap at all, no less than £7 million and money can and needs to be much better spent.

Couldn't disagree more about Holt.. With limited funds the last thing we should be doing is signing Holt  -  that would be a typical TSM type move. We've just rid ourselves of a thirty something year old striker , we don't need another. No, a bold move for Demba Ba is what is required on the forward front, but IMO, there are far more urgent concerns in midfield and defence.

Why would Demba Ba join us? Maybe we could make a sneaky bid for Rooney too?

The only reason he might consider it is that since Cisse joined he's been shoved out wide and his goals completely dried up.

No thanks, I don't ever want Villa to be improving other teams' players for them. Makes no sense at all, particularly given the news today

It makes a lot of sense, as its a cheap option, gone are the days where we could be choosy about what players we signed, we have to be much more realistic! As for improving other teams players, I don't give a damn as long as they play well for Villa (i.e. Walker).

I understand your concerns Mr U,  but, If we had him for, say, £3m (this £6-7 m is rubbish) at £25k a week for 2 years and he popped 25 into the net (more than Gabby and Heskey combined over last 2 seasons) that would be pretty decent return.
He's scored 70 in the last 3 season which is more than the 30 something striker you're talking about has scored in his career, so it's unfair to compare them. Yes, I know all but 17 were out of the prem, but his 17 last season was almost as many as our 4 strikers combined.
Once Bent got injured last season we were in the s**t as Gabby was way off form so we were relying on a 20 year old reserve striker.

Nope, sorry, disagree completely, it's no way forward long-term for us at all. I expect us to be very choosy about which players we sign so we'll have to disagree on that too! I'll go and watch the likes of Wolves when I want to see loanees

Rather than pay 5mill for a 31 year old Holt, why not grab 28 year old Pobgregynak for nothing?  Other than signing on fee's etc.  I'd be happy to let Gabby go for around ten mill, I'm sure MON would pay that kind of money.  Ship out Warnock, Dunne and Collins and rebuild that defence.

just had a text from a friend saying what he has heard a transfer budget will be, he claimed 10 million has been promised and additional funding for a special player also any money raised from sales will be pumped straight back in, and also claimed there is no upper limit on wages budget much in the same way bent was funded as a special player,

this is the same friend who claimed to see bent in bupa having a medical the day before we officially signed him. I believe him in hope more than expectation, it would be nice to think that we could throw 15+ million on a player as a special treat.
has anybody else had any supposed itk's claiming budgets?
