Surely Essien would be nailed on to go to Madrid.

He'd hardly ever play.

Big wages and hardly ever play?  Sunderland it is then!

He'd have to compete with Cuellar for the Sunderland right back spot.

So Boswinga in at right back, Kalou up top, Essien in midfield. Owen as cover, Diame alongside Essien, Hargreaves on the bench..... Cuellar resigned for centre half, Guzan in goal..

You could build a pretty decent side on freebies this summer by the looks of things.

You can most summers!

So it makes sense for us to take advantage of that market, if for no other reason than prevents what funds we do have being stretched too thinly.

Essien is finished

Boswinga has never been the same player since injury and is distinctly average these days. Kalou has never been much more than average. Thought the pair of them were farcically poor on Chelsea's right flank against Bayern.

We would have to take on extra medical staff to cover the workload though.

Michu is dirt cheap, and can actually score.

I've never got how Kalou got signed and played with some regularity, at a club like Chelsea. He's bobbins. He's not really a wideman, he's not really a forward. He's just not that good.
Bosingwa is also shite. Never rated him. He was good going forward but defensively is a liability. He's also not good enough to play in midfield.

That said, both could get in our starting line up right now.

Scoring more than a goal every other game, from the wing, as a teenager for two seasons is surely enough to get most clubs interested in buying you.

He'd hardly ever play.
And why does that affect his mentality in deciding which club he wants to sign for?

A footballer of his pedigree doesn't get to where he is by looking at a team and thinking "I'm not good enough to get into that side". He'd see Khedira, Alonso, Granero and Diarra and think he was better than any of them.

He may well be wrong about it, but he certainly wouldn't refuse to sign for them because of other players they have in his position.

It was in the Dutch league wasn't it? I've just never, ever seen him have a great game. If we've ever played Chelsea, I've hoped he'd be in the starting 11.
He's not bad, he's just not a top 6 player IMO.

I'm not saying he's great. But given how good he was at Feyernoord it's no surprise that Chelsea decided to buy him. It was your comment about not understanding "why Chelsea signed him" that I took issue with. It's obvious why they signed him.

He is a useful player. I would take him on a free tomorrow. And Boswinga. Both would walk into our first 11.
