It would be a backward step to resign Mellberg. I never thought he was as good as many Villa fans make out anyway.

If he's struggling to get a club it's a no brainer on a 1 year deal considering the lack of experience we've got back there if Cuellar, Collins and Warnock all leave as suggested.

Mellbergs miles better than anything we have in CD right now. Clark hasn't had enough time at the back and is still learning, but will be class. Dunne is fat and shit and has a poor attitude. Collins is shit. Cuellers gone...and is mediocre. Mellberg was consistently good for years here. One of the few to come out of the Taylor and O Leary struggles with credit. I won't let his run at right back, playing out of position mar my opinion of him. I love Olof. For 1 year? Why not. We won't have much money, so no harm in it. Get him. Sign another decent established CB as 1st choice.

Signing Mellberg could be a clever move, for 1 in would please the fans and 2 he is still better than most of our defence.

Watch olympiakos Twice this season in Europe and he still looked capable.
He might want his shirts back, though (the ones he gave out at WHU).

I don't want an older Mellberg back who might have lost a step. My last memories of Mellberg are all great ones including him coming off the pitch having battered the noses. It might seem a romantic thing to do, but rarely do returning heroes perform to the same level. I don't want to be disappointed and have those memories tarnished.

It seems Olof Mellberg is available on a free from Olympiakos - I know he is 34 and a centre back (and the old adage is 'never go back') but I'd definitely take him over Alan Hutton.

Never go back.

Is anyone still worried about us signing Karl Henry now?

Depends if Mick McCarthy is the gaffer.

He's a footballer, not a firework.
But I'd give him a miss too. A legend for us (in terms of character and raport with fans if not talent) but that chapter is finished.

Just because a new manager is coming in, doesn't mean he will disagree with any recommendations the scouts have made. I reckon we'll still be in for the likes of Douglas. It would be nice if we got the new regime in sharpish though to get the ball rolling. Much work to do.

Feeling more optimistic now. Surely Randy will make damn sure the decision is right. Ignore any fucking post he gets from that dappy old bastard Fergie.
We just need to give the new man 20 million to spend + plus whatever he can earn from sales.

Lets face it, the only way we'll ever get nicely in the black is to get our squad to the point where relegation is inevitable no matter who's in charge. And then we'll lose a shed load going down and be even more fucked any way.

Best way forward is to speculate to accumulate. Lets get 3-4 decent players, with experience and still young. We have to try to be pushing up to the top 8 again, and bare minimum, solid mid-table.

I know most will shoot it down, but I'm just saying we should take a look at Hargreaves.

Lee and Holden at Bolton too, although both have had long term injuries (only reason they went down, IMO) - so it'd be difficult to justify spending £6m+ on them.

A suggestion for left-back is Stephen Crainey. He's thirty, but whenever I've seen him he's looked a fine player. He has absolutely zero cover from the wingers in front of him at Blackpool and always manages to look solid.
