Was reading the other day that Lerner has a 40k wage cap in place, hence we couldn't get Andy Johnson even on a freebie.

40K for a Premiership player, that's going to take some shopping around.

Bit annoying considering that Bent's on twice that amount. We'll have to go abroad I suppose.

According to Mat Kendrick on his web chat yesterday, £40k will be the wage cap for most players but should a better/special player come along, there will be some movement to accomodate their higher wages

I wouldn't pay 4,000 a week for Johnson. I'd rather have Jerome, and that's really saying something.

40k a week, what a bleeding hardship!!  I'm sure they'll be able to claim some benefits as well.  They need to get real.  Money is ruining the game.

Cant not agree with you anymore!  Been saying it for ages that money has ruined the game.

I would guess that Johnson will have a hard time getting anywhere near 40k a week at any club. Except perhaps at Sunderland.

I'm glad this story was in the Mirror.

40k is a decent whack. If we can't put a squad together on 40k a week capable of top half minimum with the odd top player on more then we are not moving forward scouting wise at all.

I agree.

I think one issue with us is that we're so used to going for UK based players who have an expectation of big money right from the start. I am sure he's not on that sort of money now, but I remember when Spurs were said to be paying Modric 40k a week, and at the same time, we were paying Sidwell the same.

If you get in a player who starts on 40k and pushes you to give him 70 or 80k, then you know you've got an asset who is growing in value - otherwise you'd tell him to do one.

Where we got it wrong was throwing stupid wages at UK based players who were never really going to grow in value, and who were largely getting their one "big" contract of their career, and were never going to be worth more than we paid for them.

Going back to Modric, he's a good example of the way Spurs play the long game way, way better than we did. Under MON it was all so short term, he was never going to be able to leave much of a legacy with his blinkered approach to player recruitment.

Turnover of £100m, RL wants a wage to turnover ratio of 70%, so about £70m,Working on a squad of 25, thats about an average of £60k per week.
