Matt Jarvis is so inconsistent he makes CNZ look like a 100% effort week in, week out player.

As for Michal Owen, what would be the point? The bloke is constantly injured, and far too old. He is exactly the sort of signing we should be avoiding.

Yes a "midfield general" is absolutely essential. We have plenty of players who can play around such a player but nobody that really fits the bill yet.

Thankfully Owen's wage demands would probably frighten Randy off.

It says here in The Times that we are interested in (or at least McLeish "refused to refute") Andy Carroll. Wouldn't surprise me at all, to be honest, providing he is at something of a knockdown price.

As poor as he has looked at Liverpool, I still think he's a good player who'll probably do very well in the right team. Whether that could be us or not, I don't know.

Carroll is potentially a goal machine. I've said it for years. Unfortunately he's potentially a piss artist who will waste his talent too.
I wouldn't be suprised if a potential swap with Bent was discussed (if Bent wanted out).
Properly used and motivated, Carroll is the best centre old fashioned forward in the league. But there's the rub; properly used and motivated.

I think we could see with losing a few c*nts from our playing staff rather than adding more.

Trouble with signing Carroll is that we'd have to get the ball somewhere near the goal for him to score. For reference, see D Bent.

I agree with Mazrim, Carroll is a good player.  Just hasn't worked for him at 'The Mighty Reds YNWA'.  I think he'd be a good signing for Villa but would require players around him to get him the ball.  We don't have those players currently and I'm not sure that McLeish likes wingers at all.

Don't want Carroll. Yeah, he's the best young player of his type in this league, but that type is becoming redundant.

Would prefer us to look at Grant Holt if we're gonna go down that route (and they have to be domestic based).

If you look back to his Newcastle days he scored plenty of goals from the edge of the area, that's something we've been lacking too.
If it happened it would be at the expence of Bent.
It's a case of weighing up the pros and cons of each to see which one fits us better.
When we had Young and Downing, it would be Bent by a country mile. These days, and I've mentioned this before, I'm not so sure.
How about a shot at Jorden Rhodes from Huddersfield?

Rhodes is a gamble. One you'd have to pay really good money for him, and the fact that he's British certainly doesn't help from that standpoint. There's a lot of hype around him so that adds to his value. Then, can he make the leap up two levels? See Jermaine Beckford as an example of a player that couldn't make the adjustment. If he works out, then fine he'll have been worth the investment but I think when you are buying lower league talent that is on everyone's radar it comes with numerous warning signs. I always find that the lower league players that make the grade are naturally gifted but have been spotted before they've really made a splash. Good scouts can generally tell who can or cannot make that leap, which in my opinion, despite all of the hype and records, Beckford was never really sought after.

The middle of the park needs the most strengthening. We need a player to sit and dictate the pace, a ball winner and a box to box type.

Agree with this, although I think GG could be our box to box midfielder.  I think our strike team is more than capable (excluding heskey whom I'm hoping is fucked right off in the summer).  Bent plays when we have the luxury of not needing to defend quite as hard, gabby when we need a striker to defend a little more, there's room for both and as they don't work together play weimann with either in a 442.

I don't want bent to leave, we just need to build the squad to play to his strengths and that will suit gabby too.

Oh...and a manager that allows and trains the team to play football....
