It's funny, pubey used to pay top dollar for crap players. What changed?

Presumably Eliot Short, unlike his fellow American owner, knows his anus from his humerus when it comes to football and finances.  Although perhaps not enough to know that Warnock is only worth about 25 quid.

Noticable that pubey very quickly got rid of Quinn though, so I do not think it will long before he has total control and can fill the squad with well paid journey men.

Agree. I'd be quite happy if any of Hutton, Warnock, Dunne, Collins, Ireland and Heskey went in the Summer.

I think Hutton is improving, so would keep him, plus one of Dunne or Collins as cover, and Ireland should also be retained.

I'd like to see:-

Keepers; Given and Guzan
Fullbacks; Hutton, new LB, Lichaj & Stephens
Centre backs; Cuellar, new signing, Clark, Collins & Baker
Central mid; Petrov, new DCM, Gardner & Herd
Wingers/attacking mid; N'Zogbia, Ireland, Holman, Albrighton & Bannan
Strikers; Bent, Gabby, new target man & Weimann.

To go; Delfouneso, Makoun, Warnock, Heskey & Dunne

5 incoming players, including Holman.  The key in the new CB and DCM, as this is where we are very weak right now and strengthening the spine of the team is essential this summer.

Makes sense and is a good post, but you dont should include Petrov, all respect for the man, but he is 32 and how about his leukaemia... So make that six, on the other half. I do really rate Makoun II, its a shame really.

I think 2 central midfield players are a must, as is a left back, a centre back a winger and a striker. I would say Holman is the start. 6-7 more of quality are needed or next season will be very, very tough. Ideally it would be 10 with the dead wood long gone.

I would love Makoun to be given another chance in the midfield but I don't think AM or the player wants to stay now.

Totally agree about Short having a reasonable clue on pricing, but the other reason is Warnock will have only a year left on his contract in the summer.

Hutton might have improved some what, but he was so fucking rubbish to start with, it doesn't mean much.

As that bloke mentioned earlier said on Talk Sport, "when he gets out of position, he leaves so much space behind him you could hold a music festival there".

If Warnock isn't good enough (and he isn't), neither is Hutton, as he's every bit as shit.

The problem is, Eck signed him, so is unlikely to ditch him.

The way central midfield has declined in the last two years is a joke and says as much why we've fallen down the table.

Two years ago we had Petrov and Milner as our first choice and decent back up in Gardner, NRC, Sidwell and Delph.

Now we're down to Stan a bit older and obviously convalescing, Ireland who's finally showing decent form and then a whole bunch of kids learning their trade in the premier league.

We need an energetic, dominant force in central midfield, I've mentioned him before but Mo Diame on a free from Wigan fits the bill imo. I know Stoke are interested in him.

Can see us looking at a few other of those players down there...Onouha, Rodallega, Matt Jarvis and Stephen Fletcher being some of those names.

A player who can't always get into a very mediocre Wigan midfield. I'd hope that even we would be setting our sights a bit higher.

Completely agree re. Diame. Good player.

However I imagine domestic free transfers will be avoided due to the wage bill issue and the wage percentage increase free's demand. The likes of Holman will probably be on a massive increase but still within our budget.

Regarding frees, still annoyed we missed out on Larsson last Summer.

Tell me how or why.

He doesn't pass, tackle, shoot or intercept.

He stands there, being above average size so the assumption is that he is a holding midfielder. But he doesn't hold. Or do anything of any note.

He does nothing that Herd doesn't do for us already.

He's a decent passer, good going forward too. Shootings a bit off but he makes good runs. He's not a solid tackler but he breaks up the player.

I don't think he's a world beater, or even a top 6 player, but we're skint and he's better than anything we've got at the minute (Stan aside) IMO.

I'd look at Gomez too while we're there. Wigan have a decent midfield.

This has always been our problem.

Instead of buying shit Wigan midfielders we should be looking at the French, German, Dutch, Belgian and Swiss leagues.

Hopefully somewhere along the line we can inject a bit more imagination into things. As Paulie says though, I won't be holding my breath.

And a lot of us thought these threads were depressing in the days of the MON regime!!

Fair enough, he spunked away a lot of money and I hope he crashes and burns at Sunderland and we never ever give a manager that much freedom ever again, but, simply as a fan those really were the days. We used to use those threads to find the missing part of the jigsaw. Now we're speculating what Wigan player we can get or if his wages are affordable.

At the moment we are having to do freebies, so if we can find the French, Dutch, Belgium or Swiss equivalent on a free, we probably will. Whether they would be better then the shit Wigan midfielders is another matter. Of course that would depend upon whether the Chairman/CEO sanction the signings of non premier league experienced players is another matter. (although the signing of Holman indicates they probably will).
