I think he's the wrong side of 30 and combined with the Blackburn experience, I'd avoid.

I don't know Arlo I can go. With Holman in the side the team could come out to "Alice-bands Restaurant".

One of Guthrie or Jermaine Jones would be good business. We know we're on a limited budget for awhile, so it makes sense.

Christ, look who are talking about nowadays.
Limited budget for a while is basically while Lerner is in charge, could be years.

Yup. Could be. So taking players on frees who improve the squad is good business.

I hear what you're saying Summers, but the term "free transfer" is a bit of a misnomer.  The players have such great leverage when their contracts have expired that they can ask for stupid wages and signing on fees.  The fact that Steve McManaman was the world's highest paid footballer for a period demonstrates this.

I'm not saying don't sign free transfers (ever), just that they're not always value for money.  Beye for example cost us relatively little in transfer fees but was a complete waste of XXXXXX millions over his contract.

Well yes, but that only happened because our manager was an idiot and pissed money up the wall. Beye's contract was an abomination. As long as we stick to our beliefs wage wise, it's fine. Say we are chasing Guthrie, if he asks for money that exceeds what we feel he's worth then we look elsewhere. I understand the point, and it's important that the club hold their ground and don't let 'decent' players bleed the club dry with astronomical wages.

The second Beye and his agent said "How about 40k?" We should have walked out of the meeting.

It would be a lot worse if we found out that we pulled a Seth Johnson. That Beye only wanted 20k and we offered 40k. They signed and went and got absolutely wankered to celebrate their good fortune.

Probably the same as other negotiations. Demand, offer, compromise.

Gareth Barry was in the Shakespeare pub in town yesterday watching the rugby. So my contribution to this bullshit part of the thread is that he'll be back in the summer signing for the Villa.
