I don't really know how good Guthrie is, but if Newcastle want him I doubt he will leave. They have had a decent season so far, certainly better than ours, and he appears to have played fairly regularly. Also, they seem to be pretty switched-on when it comes to player recruitment at the moment, so if he is any good, I'd have thought that they'd hang on to him. I'm perfectly happy for us to be linked with decent, relatively young players on free transfers though - seems like a reasonable way to complement our emerging academy players, whilst saving transfer funds for when we need them. Certainly seems more sensible/ practical than MON deciding 'I absolutely must have this player' regardless of their age, and whether or not they are in contract etc.

Guthrie will only ever be a filler inner for Cabaye and Tiote who are the type of players we would be ideally looking at.

You'd have thought if we seriously fluttered our eyelids at players like Clyne, Zahar maybe even Hoilett then they'd be flattered as we're definitely a step up from their current clubs.  Of course their are better clubs than us out there who may be interested but if we're going down the Bosman/Tribunal route then Clyne and Hoillet seem the best out there.

Hugo Guthrie is the mayor of Tipton in 'Viz'. So clearly he is a local lad.

Guthrie would be a solid enough addition from what I have seen of him, can pass, tackle a bit and always appeared in the game. On a free, I see it as a good move, especially if it means we can loan out Delph for a full season to get his mojo back, which I think he needs. I would not write him off yet, but a full season in the Championship would do him good. Guthrie could well compliment Herd, Gardner and Petrov. Still one short me though. I would go for Diame too on a bosman. 5-6 good bosmans, covered by the wages of those leaving and a couple of money signings and we could at least have a squad with a few options.

A couple of youngsters with potential from the Championship would be great - Clyne and Phillips for me

This is all I think of whenever I hear his name.

"Knowing me, knowing you, Zaha."

I didn't think King was at Birmingham last season while McLeish was there, thought he joined during the summer.

A quick check on Wikipedia states that the convicted sex offender signed for them on 10/06/11 and that AM resigned on 12/06/11.

Not sure what that proves, but those are the dates involved.

Cheers John. Me neither. McLeish quits in disgust, perhaps? Who knows? (actually, who cares? We won't be signing Marlon King, which is the important thing!)
Was not the joke at the time that Mcleash told the board he wanted a striker, and they bought for him, the convicted sex offender ?

He wanted six attackers, they bought him a sex attacker.

I'd find it very hard to go and watch us if we had someone as odious as Marlon King playing for us.

Maybe King fancied the move because he was told he could join a club where 11 cnuts get f*cked every week? Right up his alleyway you'd think.

Don't rate guthrie but then the way i see it its pretty much like MON's shopping list without the 50k a week wages and the 10m pound transfer fees. Nothing really changes.....

I managed to see some of the Shalke game tonight actually, and Farfan would be a great signing but someone in the champions league will noble him on a bosman, but Jermaine Jones for the 60 minutes I watched looked great, driving forward, hard as nails and decent on the ball.

Jermaine Jonas? We'll get him for nothing if we just misspell Jenas' name on the squad list.

That's the kind of creative recruitment / squad-building we need, down VP.
