Worth remembering that Bosman transfers are not free transfers, you still have to pay a wedge up front which goes directly to the player.

Isn't that just a signing fee? Like in any transfer?

From what I've read, Holman seems to be like Kuyt? Really hard worker in the wide areas, although he can cover the middle too.

Milner type perhaps?

Yep, but with Bosmans, I imagine the player is in a stronger bargaining position "you're getting me for free, I want a bigger up front fee"

Yeah, maybe, but then it removes the attraction of going for Bosmans in the first place so there's a limit.
I suppose it depends on who you are. The likes of Holman I would imagine are getting a nominal fee.

Not quite.

Let's imagine Holman would normally cost £3m.

He'll want at least £1m paid over the length of his contract on top of wages.

Still cheaper than a conventional transfer, but not free.

As Fletch says, I too am not too sure about that.

If you imagine a player in the 5m bracket being available on a free, he's going to have his agent pushing for something along the 0 - 5m scale as his signing fee.

You're right, it won't be the same as the fee would have been had he been in contract, but it'll be somewhere along that scale - it'll be one of the reasons why players so often let their contracts run down.

Talking of which, and off on a slight tangent, how do Arsenal so frequently get into the situation of their best players having only a year left? RVP is out of contract at the end of next season, i see. That's going to make it hard for them to hold onto him this summer.

I expect them to finish in the top 4, which will help. But I also expect Man City to come in with a bajillion squid.

He's got two games to prove himself, or else.

One of those games should be away at Man City, too.

Also if there is several teams after him, he can play them off against one another, pushing the fee up further.

I believe he lives in a council flat in Liege and has had alcohol troubles since retiring.

I know nothing about him as a player but have had a twinge of optimism stirred within me since we signed him. It's always nice to see new players arrive and he seems to come with the 'right' attitude. Welcome aboard Brett!
